Meta cut 8,000 jobs, equivalent to about 10% of its global workforce, in a round of layoffs that began on May 20 as the company accelerated its transformation to an artificial intelligence (AI)-centric model.
According to Reuters and international sources, layoff notices were sent regionally, starting in Singapore at 4 a.m. local time. Employees in the UK, the US, and elsewhere then received notifications later that morning, according to their respective time zones. Affected positions are believed to include personnel in content integrity, cybersecurity, and content design teams.
In addition to job cuts, Meta also canceled plans to fill approximately 6,000 vacant positions and reassigned around 7,000 employees to AI-related roles. The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp is accelerating its investment in AI infrastructure, with projected capital spending of $125 billion to $145 billion this year, more than double that of 2025.

In a memo to employees, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that AI is “the most impactful technology of our lifetime” and that leading companies in this field will shape the next generation. Zuckerberg also thanked affected employees and said Meta does not anticipate any further company-wide layoffs this year.
However, this transition is causing concern within Meta. More than 1,000 employees, according to some sources, over 1,500, have signed a petition opposing the program that tracks employee computer usage data to train AI models. Some employees fear they are contributing to training tools that could replace their jobs.
Meta isn't the only tech company cutting jobs amid the booming AI landscape. Cisco recently announced cuts to around 4,000 jobs, while Microsoft and several other tech companies are implementing workforce reduction programs or voluntary acquisitions.
