Microsoft is positioning automated agents—programs that require minimal human intervention unlike chatbots—as "applications for an AI-driven world " that can handle customer queries, identify potential customers, and manage inventory.

Microsoft will allow customers to build AI agents for routine tasks starting in November.
Other major tech companies like Salesforce have also touted the potential of such agents, tools that some analysts believe could provide businesses with an easier path to monetizing the billions of dollars they invest in AI.
Microsoft says customers can use Copilot Studio—an application that requires little knowledge of computer code—to create such agents in a public preview starting in November. The company is using a number of enterprise-developed and OpenAI-developed AI models for the agents.
Microsoft also introduced 10 ready-to-use agents that can help handle everyday tasks from supply chain management to cost tracking and customer communication.
In a pilot test, McKinsey & Co., an early adopter of these tools, created an agent that could manage client requests by reviewing interaction history, identifying the consultant for the task, and scheduling follow-up appointments.
"The idea behind Copilot (the company's chatbot) is that it's a user interface for AI. Each employee will have a Copilot, their personalized AI agent, and then will use this Copilot to communicate and interact with countless other AI agents," Charles Lamanna, vice president of Copilot business and industry at Microsoft, told Reuters.
Tech giants are facing pressure to prove a return on their massive investments in AI. Microsoft's stock price fell 2.8% in the third quarter, underperforming the S&P 500, but is still up more than 10% year-on-year.
Concerns have been growing in recent months about the pace of Copilot adoption, with research firm Gartner reporting in August that a survey of 152 IT organizations showed that the vast majority of Copilot initiatives had not yet progressed beyond the testing phase.
