With 6 hectares of pure rice varieties DK6, PM2, ND502 planted on a pilot basis, Nam Duong Seed Company, Ninh Binh province, has coordinated with Gia Phu commune to mobilize over 100 farming households to participate. Households were trained in sowing techniques, pest control methods and were supported with 100% of seeds. Through monitoring during the production process and evaluation at harvest, all 3 rice varieties DK6, PM2, ND502 have outstanding advantages, such as: Strong plants, large panicles, small, long, bright yellow grains, large number of grains per panicle. The plants have good resistance, and infection with blast, leaf blight, brown spot, and planthopper diseases are all at insignificant levels.
Mr. Luong Van Duc, Na Kham village, Gia Phu commune, shared: When participating in the pilot rice growing model, I chose the DK6 variety to plant on an area of 3,000 m2 . I was instructed on rice care techniques for each stage of rice growth. The harvested rice yield reached 1.5 tons, about 3 quintals more than the previous variety. In the next crop, I will choose to plant more varieties PM2 and ND502 to have the most objective comparison of rice varieties, before choosing one to mainly plant in the following production seasons.
Mr. Hoang Van Anh's family, Khoa 2 village, Gia Phu commune, has over 3,500 m2 of semi-flooded rice fields, and often prioritizes choosing short-term rice varieties to harvest in time. This year, the water receded early, along with choosing short-term rice varieties, helping his family and many other households have a bumper crop.
Mr. Anh informed: Around the beginning of March this year, the water began to recede, we looked for short-term rice varieties to produce in semi-flooded fields. Through introductions, I chose the rice varieties PM2, DK6 and ND502, all of which are new, short-term varieties. After about 2 and a half months, we were able to harvest with a yield of about 6.5 tons/ha. Thus, the annual water receding period ensures a harvest, so we trust and continue to choose these rice varieties for production.
According to farmers, after deducting costs, the above three rice varieties yield a profit of about 28-30 million VND/ha. The advantages of the above three rice varieties are that the rice grains are shiny, rich in flavor, and delicious. After milling, the rice yield is over 68%, the head rice yield is 74%, the rice is 6.85 mm long, the content meets the standards, and the appearance is beautiful. The results of the pilot planting show that the new rice varieties are completely suitable for local climate conditions, which is the basis for mass production in neighboring communes.
Mr. Nguyen Van Long, Deputy Director of Nam Duong Seed Company, Ninh Binh Province, said: After the spring crop of 2025, we will continue to expand the area of rice varieties provided by the Company in other communes with similar natural conditions, such as Phu Yen, Tan Phong, etc. The Company has a warranty policy for rice varieties provided to farmers. The Company recommends that farmers keep the seed packaging in case of pests and diseases, the rice does not bloom, thereby supporting people suffering losses after inspection.
Currently, Gia Phu, Phu Yen, Muong Coi, Muong Bang communes... have 2,450 hectares of double-crop rice, of which Phu Yen commune alone has more than 1,300 hectares of rice, with 631 hectares of organic rice, 130 hectares of which have been certified organic. With the brand "Phu Yen Rice" recognized by consumers and has a foothold in the market. Choosing reputable seed suppliers plays an important role for the locality to continue to build and consolidate the established brand.
By introducing high-quality, high-yield varieties into cultivation, creating a concentrated rice production area large enough to link production with product consumption in the value chain, helping to increase economic efficiency and enhance market competitiveness for agricultural products of Phu Yen district.
