Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quyet Thang - Head of the Department of Tourism, Restaurant and Hotel Management at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, assessed that tourism in An Giang is currently an important economic sector of the province, serving as a center for coastal, island, and integrated tourism in the Southwest region. However, the province currently faces limitations in transportation infrastructure and lacks synchronized regional tourism linkages. Dr. Thang suggested that An Giang needs to improve policies, develop human resources, tourism infrastructure, attract investment, and protect environmental resources, aiming to develop tourism into a key economic sector of the province, with high competitiveness in the national and international tourism system, and as a distribution center for international tourists in the entire region.
In the planning document, Mr. Thang suggested that An Giang should develop tourism in conjunction with key development areas: Phu Quoc - Ha Tien - Kien Luong, Rach Gia - Kien Hai, Mount Sam - Chau Doc - Bay Nui, Long Xuyen - Cu Lao Gieng, and the U Minh Thuong ecological zone. “Within the province’s overall development space, Phu Quoc must be identified as the center for attracting international tourists and the gateway for receiving and distributing tourists to other tourism regions. This is also the core element driving innovation in tourism development models and attracting large investment corporations,” Mr. Thang said.
Dang Van Si, Director of the Bay Nui Golden Land Tourism and Agriculture Development Cooperative, proposed that An Giang should research the development of river tourism and civil aviation tourism to serve visitors. According to Mr. Si, in recent days, about 30 luxury yachts have been regularly passing through and anchoring on the Mekong River (Tan Chau area). However, these "super-rich" international tourists on the yachts have not had the opportunity to disembark and explore due to the lack of a pier. Therefore, the locality needs to build a pier to soon welcome this high-end tourist group. In addition, An Giang should research civil aviation services to serve tourism, especially routes from Phu Quoc to nearby destinations within the province, thereby creating more attractive tourism products for visitors.
Experts suggest that An Giang needs more emotionally rich, rejuvenating tourism products, destinations focused on healing, exploration, and slow living to attract Gen Z tourists; and mechanisms to attract more large investors to small islands. The province should research and propose visa exemptions for foreign tourists with a stay of 180 days in Phu Quoc. Experts are also interested in leveraging the "golden opportunity" to promote and attract investment at the APEC 2027 event and the sustainable exploitation and development of the "APEC 2027 heritage" after the event concludes…
According to Bui Quoc Thai, Director of the Department of Tourism, the tourism sector will focus on finalizing the project "Developing An Giang Province's Tourism in the period 2025-2030, with a vision to 2035," concentrating on improving infrastructure while protecting tourism resources; creating a cultural, civilized, friendly, and hospitable tourism environment... In the coming time, the province will promote the application of information technology, strengthen tourism promotion on digital platforms, and facilitate tourists' access to information. An Giang will focus on developing experiential tourism products, green and sustainable tourism with high competitiveness, aiming to develop An Giang tourism not only to be high-class but also to have its own brand.
To make the most of the APEC 2027 event, the province is promoting training programs, linking with schools to train high-quality tourism human resources, and implementing policies to attract talent; developing unique, high-end tourism products focusing on premium experiences. “We are building communication campaigns to promote the APEC 2027 event destination through smart tourism platforms; encouraging businesses to upgrade technical infrastructure, develop unique and attractive tourism products, and improve the quality of service for tourists; launching the ‘Every citizen is a tourism ambassador’ movement to create a friendly image in behavior and communication… leaving a deep impression on international friends,” Mr. Thai said.
