The workshop was attended by representatives from several international organizations; representatives from national parks and nature reserves; experts, tourism businesses, and relevant departments, agencies, and localities.
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Van Ba Son, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that biodiversity is very important for tourism because a healthy environment is a key factor for the competitiveness of the tourism industry.
Coastlines, mountains, rivers, and forests are key attractions for tourists worldwide . Biodiversity is at the heart of nature-based tourism products, such as wildlife viewing, scuba diving, or tourism within protected areas.
"Tourism connects people with nature and can promote responsibility for conservation and environmental protection if done sustainably. Biodiversity is a crucial resource for developing sustainable ecotourism," said Mr. Van Ba Son.
Conversely, sustainable tourism activities contribute to preserving and conserving ecosystem service values, raising awareness of conservation, helping to protect the human living environment, and ensuring environmental harmony for plant and animal species.
At the same time, sustainable tourism helps to exploit resources scientifically, thereby providing socio -economic benefits and services to local communities, creating jobs, improving livelihoods, and contributing to poverty reduction.
Participants in the workshop discussed key issues such as: experiences in creating sustainable livelihoods for people linked to tourism development; bottlenecks that need to be addressed in biodiversity-based tourism development; and the development of policies and plans for managing and developing sustainable ecotourism.
