In 2025, the high school graduation exam will enter its first year under the new format, therefore universities have also developed plans to innovate their own entrance exams to align with the 2018 General Education Program.
Expand the testing locations.
Hanoi University of Science and Technology has just announced the schedule for the 2025 aptitude test, with three rounds at 30 testing locations. In addition to the 12 provinces and cities as in 2024, the university has opened an additional testing location in Lao Cai province to make it more convenient for candidates from the Northwest region.
Accordingly, the exam can accommodate approximately 75,000 test-takers. The first exam will be held on January 18-19, 2025, with registration open from December 1-6, 2024; the second exam will be on March 8-9, 2025, with registration open from February 1-6, 2025; and the third exam will be on April 26-27, 2025, with registration open from April 1-6, 2025.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology announced that the exam structure remains stable from last year, with 3 parts: Mathematical Thinking (60 minutes), Reading Comprehension Thinking (30 minutes), and Scientific Thinking/Problem Solving (60 minutes). These are 3 independent parts, with questions focusing on assessing the candidates' thinking abilities, not directly testing knowledge of any particular subject.
Hanoi University of Science and Technology stated that it has implemented many modern testing technologies to thoroughly prevent cheating and impersonation during exams.
The TSA exam is a computer-based multiple-choice test. The total score is 100 points. The exam results are valid for two years for university applications (depending on the university).
Currently, there are 10 universities and institutions nationwide that organize their own entrance exams. Along with the aptitude test of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the competency assessment exams of Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City attract the most candidates and are used by many universities for admissions.
In 2024, the Hanoi National University's HSA (Higher Health Sciences Authority) aptitude test was used by approximately 90 universities for their entrance examinations. Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Hanoi National University's Examination Center, stated that the format and questions of the 2025 HSA aptitude test will be adjusted to align with the 2018 General Education Program, with changes in question quality.
According to Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Quality Assessment of Training (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), the university's aptitude test will have adjustments to its test structure to suit the changes in the new curriculum. These adjustments will lead to changes in the way universities select students based on the results of this exam next year.
A guide to achieving high scores on competency assessments.
Starting from the 2025 admissions season, 12th-grade students will have an additional method of admission to teacher training colleges, as Hanoi University of Education 2 recently announced its intention to organize its own entrance exam and use the results of this exam for admission.
The trend of universities increasing the number of places allocated to admissions based on their own entrance exams is seen as expanding opportunities for students to enter higher education. However, participating in multiple exams simultaneously also puts a great deal of pressure on students.
To support candidates in reviewing and preparing for the Hanoi National University's aptitude test, Professor Nguyen Tien Thao said that the university is currently collaborating with experts and publishers to release a study guide for the aptitude test.
"In the coming time, we will release materials for students to refer to and build effective and practical study plans. However, the most essential and important material is currently in the hands of the students: the textbooks."
"The published review handbook only outlines the basic requirements and formats. The exam results largely depend on the abilities developed and accumulated during the general education program," Professor Nguyen Tien Thao informed.
Similarly, Hanoi University of Science and Technology also launched the "TSA Thinking Skills Assessment Exam Handbook" to help candidates better understand the exam structure and content, familiarize themselves with question types, study guidance, test-taking methods, and analyze illustrative examples.
For each section of the exam, the guide provides a summary of fundamental knowledge, introduces sample exam questions, analyzes and guides the solution, offers study guidance by topic, and includes some additional practice questions with answers.
The handbook also includes instructions on using the exam software and provides candidates with two codes to take practice tests on the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's system.
