Expanding Vinh Airport

VnExpressVnExpress02/03/2024

Nghe An's Vinh Airport will be expanded by more than 2.5 hectares, increasing the number of aircraft parking positions from 6 to 9, with a total investment of over 230 billion VND.

On March 2nd, the People's Committee of Nghe An province announced that it had approved the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) as the investor for the project.

The project is being implemented in Nghi Lien commune, Vinh City, on national defense land, with construction lasting 12 months. 100% of the funding is provided by the investor, focusing on renovating and expanding the aircraft parking area, building a terminal, and a secondary radar station.

Mr. Hoang Phu Hien, Director of the Nghe An Department of Transport, said that currently, Vinh Airport lacks parking space during peak hours, forcing planes to circle while waiting for a parking spot. The upgrade will help resolve the congestion during peak hours, reduce costs for airlines, and make travel more convenient for people, eliminating the need for night flights.

Opened in late 2003, Vinh Airport initially had only one runway, 2,400 meters long and 45 meters wide, with a designed capacity of 2.75 million passengers per year. Currently, the airport handles 21-26 flights daily from airlines such as Vietnam Airlines , VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways, and Pacific Airlines. In July 2023, the airport had to close for nearly 16 hours due to cracks in the asphalt concrete layer of approximately 40 square meters of the runway.

According to the airport system planning for the period 2021-2030, Vinh International Airport will be a 4E-class airport (capable of accommodating Airbus 350, Boeing 787 and equivalent) with a total area of over 557 hectares and a designed capacity of 8 million passengers per year.
