The most hated sport: Pickleball?

Which athlete is the most hated? Which team is the most hated? These are common topics in sports debates. And since pickleball emerged, the sports world has added another question: "Which sport is the most hated?"

Pickleball surpasses golf and cricket in terms of... popularity.

Sports are inherently emotional games, and because of that emotional nature, some sports sometimes receive hatred from athletes in general. From golf and football to cricket and pickleball.

The feeling of resentment comes from many dimensions. With golf, the sport is often stigmatized as a "sport for the rich." With football, sometimes just the loud shouting of neighborhood kids, or the drawn-out duration of cricket, can frustrate those waiting to watch on television...

But since pickleball emerged, all the criticism seems to have been directed at the sport. An article in The Washington Post asserted that pickleball is the most hated sport in the world.

Many people who play other sports have a rather unfavorable view of pickleball, and the media has repeatedly compiled opinions, concluding that pickleball is the most... disliked sport.

However, the reason why pickleballs are disliked by many people doesn't actually stem from subjective factors, but rather from a combination of many angles, including a scientific one.

First, there's the sound factor: the characteristic "pop" sound when the racket hits the ball has a frequency and nature that can be quite irritating.

According to the ASA (American Society for Acoustic Medicine), numerous recent acoustic studies and analyses warn that constantly hearing the "pop" of pickleballs can lead to stress, sleep disturbances, and psychological effects for residents living near the field.

A series of studies and analyses in the field of acoustics have documented the level of nuisance and the public health symptoms associated with this noise.

Next is the conflict over public space: the rapid rise of pickleball has led to a surge in demand for courts, while the infrastructure has not kept pace.

In many cities, tennis courts, basketball courts, or public parks are being converted into pickleball courts. Many players even rent tennis courts to practice pickleball.

This sparked strong opposition from players of other sports, who felt their space was being encroached upon.

For example, in the US, there have been numerous protests against pickleball. A court in Arlington County (Virginia) is currently handling nine lawsuits related to this issue.

Some articles have described this as a “pickleball war” in many urban areas. This is something unprecedented in tennis or badminton.

Lack of professionalism

Next is the perception of professionalism and image. Because it's so accessible, pickleball attracts a large number of newcomers, creating a feeling that "anyone can play," and leading some fans of traditional sports to underestimate the technical skill or professional depth of this sport. This is truly an emotional factor.

Furthermore, as pickleball becomes heavily commercialized, it is more likely to feature content and imagery that are inappropriate for the sport.

Furthermore, the lack of unified associations makes pickleball highly prone to controversy and conflict. For example, in Vietnam recently, there have been heated debates surrounding allegations of biased refereeing against certain players.

Fashion and imagery in the game also contribute to the controversy. Although some governing bodies (e.g., USA Pickleball) have regulations regarding "non-offensive" elements, in reality, pickleball is a true sporting fashion show.

The "easy to play, easy to understand" aspect led to many young girls participating, and the provocative nature of the costumes further increased the appeal. From an outsider's perspective, this caused some controversy.

In addition, other consequences such as safety and injury issues, governance scandals, and commercial disputes have further fueled controversy as pickleball enters the equipment market.

On social media, "dramas" between pickleball groups, athletes, brands, and tournaments are increasingly common, creating the impression of a chaotic, unprofessional, and unsportsmanlike playing field.

Pickleball websites like Pickler have also published numerous articles analyzing these issues, acknowledging that the sport, which has boomed in the last five years, truly has too many problems that remain unaddressed.

"Most hated" might be a somewhat subjective category. But it also points to the fact that pickleballs are facing many problems, and their growth is exceeding society's ability to adapt.
