According to Queensland Police, the incident occurred near the Kennedy Shoal shallow reef area, about 45 km from the coast.
The victim was brought ashore immediately after being bitten by the shark. Medical personnel quickly arrived at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Authorities have not yet released the victim's identity.

Local media reported that several beaches in the area were temporarily closed while authorities assessed safety levels following the attack.
This is the second fatal shark attack in Australia in just over a week.
Earlier, on May 16, a 38-year-old man also died after being bitten by a shark near Perth off the west coast of Australia.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the majority of shark attacks in Australia occur along the country's east and southeast coasts, with an average of around 20 incidents recorded each year.
