Shaw (second from the left) needs a pay cut to stay at MU. |
According to British media, Manchester United's management made their position clear to Shaw when contract extension negotiations began. The 30-year-old's current agreement expires in June 2027, and MU wants him to reduce his salary in order to sign a new deal.
Shaw earns around £200,000 a week, placing him among the highest-paid players at Old Trafford. However, the club's new financial policy is forcing many stars to accept pay adjustments if they want to stay long-term.
Despite having struggled with injuries for a long time, Shaw had an impressive 2025/26 season. The England defender played in all 38 Premier League matches, becoming one of the very few Manchester United players to achieve this feat.
Shaw's consistent performances have kept him a key player in manager Michael Carrick's system. However, Manchester United are also planning for the future, seeking a younger and more energetic left-back to support their long-term plans.
Patrick Dorgu has often been pushed further forward due to his strong attacking contributions. This has prompted the coaching staff to consider recruiting a more defensive-minded full-back in the near future.
However, Shaw is still considered an important player both in the dressing room and on the pitch. MU wants Shaw to play a similar role to Harry Maguire. The central defender has agreed to a pay cut to extend his contract until the end of the 2025/26 season.
At 30, Shaw's chances of earning a comparable salary at top European clubs are slim. While the Saudi Pro League might offer attractive financial incentives, there are currently no signs that Shaw wants to leave Manchester.
