This move marks a new milestone in the U.S. effort to integrate AI into defense, intelligence, and national security operations, while establishing oversight mechanisms to limit the risk of technology misuse.

In a national security memo, President Donald Trump affirmed that the United States would promote the responsible use of AI in intelligence, defense, and warfare, consistent with American values. He argued that AI is becoming a key factor in global strategic competition and that Washington needs to maintain its leadership in this field.

According to the White House, this document also enhances national security by expanding secure computing infrastructure for large-scale AI deployment, while strengthening the AI workforce through initiatives such as the “Strategic AI Reserve for National Security.”

According to this directive, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has 90 days to update policies related to autonomous weapons systems, and is also required to conduct annual reviews of guidance related to AI to keep pace with the rapid development of the technology.

Furthermore, the document requires federal agencies to ensure that no organization, whether a business or any other entity, can: “disable, degrade, or modify an AI system that U.S. combat forces rely on without prior approval.” The memorandum also promotes collaboration with private sector companies to protect U.S. AI capabilities against global threats.

To ensure the sustainability of the security system, the White House's new strategy will diversify AI suppliers to avoid single points of failure, while rigorously protecting the AI systems that soldiers rely on from the risk of being disabled.

A meeting between President Trump and top AI executives is expected to take place as early as next week to discuss this crucial collaborative roadmap in more detail.
