According to Reuters, the agreement is still awaiting approval from US President Donald Trump, while Iran says the final text has not yet been completed.
Sources close to the negotiations say that if approved, the agreement would allow unrestricted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz – a strategic waterway that carries about 20% of the world 's oil and liquefied natural gas supply.
In return, the U.S. would lift its blockade of Iranian ports and partially ease sanctions on Tehran's oil exports.
US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that Washington and Tehran had made “significant progress,” but disagreements remained on some technical issues.
"We're reviewing a few linguistic points in the text," Mr. Vance told reporters in Washington. "There's been a lot of progress, and hopefully the President will be able to approve the agreement."
However, Iran's Tasnim news agency, citing sources close to the negotiating team, reported that the agreement text has not yet been finalized or officially confirmed.
Nevertheless, the situation on the ground remains tense. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that US forces shot down five Iranian attack drones and destroyed a control station in the port city of Bandar Abbas to prevent a sixth drone launch.

Meanwhile, on May 29, the Tasnim news agency reported that Iranian air defenses shot down a US drone over Bushehr province in southern Iran. A military source said the UAV was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Local official Masoud Tangestani confirmed the incident and said the situation in the area returned to normal after the air defense system was activated.
Alongside diplomatic efforts, the US Treasury Department announced a new package of sanctions on May 28 targeting the Iranian military's oil trade. Washington added eight ships carrying Iranian crude oil and petroleum products to the sanctions list, along with more than 15 organizations and companies accused of supporting Tehran's oil export network.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent affirmed that Washington will not allow Iran to increase its oil revenue to rebuild its military capabilities.
