According to Myanmar's state media on May 8th, a ruby weighing approximately 2.2 kg was unearthed at Mogok in the Mandalay region. Myanmar authorities described it as an "extremely large, rare, and very hard-to-find" ruby, with a purplish-red color tinged with yellow – a characteristic considered to be of high quality in the gemstone industry.
Although smaller than the 21,450-carat ruby discovered in Mogok in 1996, Myanmar officials believe the new stone has higher commercial value due to its superior color, clarity, and overall quality. However, the specific value of the ruby has not yet been announced.
Mogok has long been famous for its pigeon-blood rubies – a type of ruby considered the rarest and most expensive in the world . The area has been the subject of centuries of conflict among dynasties, lords, and forces vying for control of its resources.
