Actively support the people.

Since the beginning of the year, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, along with other functional agencies in the city, has actively implemented many programs, activities, and policies to support farmers, organizations, and individuals in developing livestock farming and preventing diseases in livestock. They have focused on guiding and supporting people in developing large-scale, high-quality, safe, and sustainable livestock and poultry farming, and strengthening value chain linkages. At the same time, they have paid attention to technical training and creating conditions for people to develop new livestock species to diversify livestock types in line with market demand and to make good use of the city's potential and advantages.

According to the Livestock and Veterinary Sub-Department under the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, the Sub-Department has coordinated with specialized agencies under the Department, as well as local authorities and relevant units, to implement training and guidance on livestock farming techniques and disease prevention measures for livestock. It supports farmers, cooperatives, and livestock farms in applying Good Animal Husbandry Practices (VietGAHP), building biosafety and disease-free livestock farming models, and facilitating connections in production and product consumption. Attention is paid to implementing and creating conditions for people to benefit from preferential policies and support from the State, especially the city's specific policies on livestock development and support for breeding stock. Accordingly, this year, more than 450 breeding pigs (cumulatively over 1,170 breeding pigs have been supported) and some breeding buffaloes, cows, and goats have been provided under a mechanism where the State budget supports 50%, and the people contribute 50%. This is an important foundation and prerequisite for building and developing good parent breeding farms to produce and supply breeding stock for commercial meat production. This will help livestock farming achieve superior productivity and quality in terms of survival rate, rapid weight gain, high carcass yield, and improved efficiency, contributing to achieving and exceeding annual and 2021-2025 livestock development targets.

With active support from relevant authorities, livestock production in the city has developed well, with both the total number of livestock and poultry increasing. Currently, the city has over 16 million poultry, reaching 100% of the plan, an increase of 24.97% compared to 2021. The pig herd is over 498,750, an increase of 15.07%; the cattle herd is 62,847, an increase of 1.24%; the buffalo herd is 4,116, an increase of 2.64% compared to 2021. The goat herd is 20,148, an increase of 2.66% compared to 2021, and other livestock numbers 170,374. The estimated output of various types of meat in 2025 is over 171,300 tons (including over 105,540 tons of livestock meat and 65,760 tons of poultry meat), reaching 100% of the annual plan; poultry eggs will exceed 720 million eggs, also reaching 100% of the annual plan. The city currently has 1,171 swiftlet farming facilities producing bird's nests, with a total of 1,285 swiftlet houses, estimated to produce over 11,400 kg/year. In addition, some specialty livestock are also showing good development trends, such as civets, spotted deer, wild boars, porcupines, pythons, and bees, raised on a household scale to serve livelihoods and develop the rural economy .

Product quality has been improved.

Overall, livestock farming activities in Can Tho City have seen many positive changes in both "quantity" and "quality," creating conditions for farmers to improve production efficiency and income. Small-scale household farming has decreased and gradually shifted towards concentrated, large-scale farming, forming farms. Production linkages between households and between households and businesses are increasingly being emphasized. Livestock and poultry farming along the value chain, biosafety and disease control, and the application of advanced science and technology in farming are being promoted. Effective farming models are being replicated and developed. Disease control and prevention in livestock are prioritized, minimizing losses and helping people confidently develop their farming.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Nhon, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, said: “Livestock farming in the city is gradually developing and undergoing significant changes, increasing both in scale and product quality. Farm-based livestock farming, concentrated in a closed-loop chain, with biosafety and disease safety, is becoming increasingly popular and is gradually forming and developing livestock farming according to good livestock farming practices…”.

Currently, Can Tho City has 1,110 livestock and poultry farms, including 46 large-scale farms, 169 medium-scale farms, and 895 small-scale farms. Can Tho has 34 livestock facilities certified under VietGAHP, including 15 cattle farms, 13 pig farms, 1 chicken farm, and 6 duck farms. 33 farms and farming areas have been certified as disease-free. The city has established and developed integrated supply chains for pork, poultry meat, poultry eggs, and cow's milk. Currently, the city has over 50 establishments producing and trading livestock breeds and breeding products, contributing to meeting the demand for high-quality breeding stock for farmers in the city and some neighboring provinces.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tan Nhon, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, the Department will continue to coordinate with relevant city and local agencies to support people in developing livestock farming and improving the efficiency of livestock production and business. Attention will be paid to promoting livestock development towards industrialization and modernization, while also promoting organic and traditional livestock farming towards commodity production. The department will strongly develop production and consumption chains for key livestock products with competitive advantages in the city to increase added value, linked to the development of slaughtering and processing of livestock products and ensuring traceability. The department will also increase the proportion of livestock products produced in professional farms and households that ensure biosafety, disease control, environmental friendliness, and meet domestic consumption and export requirements.
