On September 24, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched a new mission by launching three spacecraft at the same time with the goal of improving the ability to monitor space weather phenomena, especially solar storms. After leaving Earth's orbit, they will head towards the Lagrange 1 point, about 1.5 million kilometers from the Sun. This is a particularly stable position, favorable for observation and research. Among them, the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) is equipped with many modern devices to survey high-energy particles emitted from the Sun and the magnetic field surrounding the Solar System, promising to bring deeper understanding of cosmic radiation and space weather. They can disrupt aviation, communications, power grids, and threaten the safety of satellites and astronauts in space. Photo: Pinterest.
In parallel, the Space Weather Follow-on (SWFO-L1) spacecraft, operated by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will play a role in early detection of unusual patterns of space weather. Although threats cannot be completely prevented, timely warnings can help humanity prepare better – from protecting astronauts, warning pilots about potential disruptions to adjusting the power grid, according to NOAA's Irene Parker. The third spacecraft on the mission, the Carruthers Geocorona Observatory, will focus on studying Earth's exosphere to better understand the impact of space weather on this region. Photo: Pinterest.
