To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Russian Federation, Russia highly values the relationship between the two countries and looks forward to welcoming General Secretary To Lam to visit Russia.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Russian Federation (January 30, 1950 - January 30, 2025), a VNA reporter interviewed Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov about the significance of this important milestone in bilateral relations.

- Reporter : This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Russian Federation. Could you please assess the current and future development of this relationship?

Dmitry Peskov : We love Vietnam, Russia cherishes Vietnam very much. We value the deep historical tradition of friendship between our two countries. Vietnam is Russia's closest and most reliable partner in Asia. Russia highly values its relationship with Vietnam.

Since 2012, this relationship has been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This speaks volumes. It fosters an atmosphere of trust between the two countries, providing a solid foundation for bilateral cooperation, political dialogue, and international collaboration.

Of course, there are difficulties, both external and internal. Nevertheless, our two countries are sovereign and independent nations, giving us the confidence to move forward on the path of cooperative development, which we are currently pursuing and intend to continue pursuing.

- Reporter : Bilateral relations between Vietnam and Russia have been strengthened through high-level visits, in which leaders of both countries have affirmed their desire and emphasized the importance of further developing more effective relations. Could you please assess the new opportunities for cooperation?

Dmitry Peskov : Indeed, dialogue between our two countries is constantly developing at the working, senior, and highest levels. And this is the key to truly dynamic development in our cooperation.

Last summer, President Vladimir Putin visited Vietnam, and last year, the Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly, Tran Thanh Man, also visited Russia. Those were very significant visits, and we highly appreciate them.

In Kazan, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, President Putin held talks with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. And of course, we cannot forget the early-year visit of Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

All these visits enable us to reach agreements and consensus on work, discuss current issues, and find constructive common solutions.

This is a very effective way to conduct bilateral relations, and we are pleased that both sides consistently affirm their desire for political development and dialogue.

Russia is very much looking forward to welcoming Comrade To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, to visit Russia to attend the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in the Great Patriotic War. We know that Vietnam shares with us the memory and significance of this victory, and we are grateful to the Vietnamese people for that.

- Reporter : How do you assess Vietnam's upcoming development phase, considering that 40 years of implementing Vietnam's reform policies has laid the foundation for breakthroughs, enabling the country to confidently enter a new, strong, and sustainable phase?

Dmitry Peskov : Since gaining independence, Vietnam has made tremendous progress in socio-economic development, with GDP per capita increasing tenfold since 1991. This is truly an extraordinary achievement.

In fact, Vietnam has built many economic sectors from scratch. Vietnam has become a completely self-sufficient agricultural nation, not only meeting its own domestic needs but also becoming an exporter.

This speaks volumes about the development of advanced technology industries in Vietnam. We are delighted that all of this is being done in cooperation with Russia. The Nuclear Technology Center was built with the participation of Russia's Rosatom corporation.

This is a large-scale project – developing a crucial high-tech industry such as peaceful nuclear energy and nuclear research – which could become a significant driving force to propel Vietnam to a new level of development.

We have always appreciated Vietnam's successes on this path, but any development can only be achieved through international cooperation. And we hope that the Russian Federation will be an important trade and economic partner of Vietnam.

- Reporter : Vietnam and Russia will both celebrate important events in 2025: the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in the Great Patriotic War, the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's Declaration of Independence, and the 50th anniversary of national reunification. Preserving historical memory is becoming increasingly important. In your opinion, what steps can we take to ensure that our younger generation knows more about the history of the relationship and the traditional friendship between the two countries, while preserving and strengthening the achievements of bilateral relations?

Dmitry Peskov : The 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in the Great Patriotic War is a sacred milestone for all Russian people.

We cherish this memory, and it always deeply saddens us when someone begins to forget the significance of this event, or worse, begins to distort history, attempting to diminish our country's role in the victory over fascism and saving humanity from the fascist plague.

Therefore, we are making efforts and are very grateful to Vietnam for its cooperation on the international stage, at the United Nations. Most recently, at the UN General Assembly, Vietnam, along with other countries, signed a Resolution on combating neo-fascist phenomena.

This is a very important resolution, and we are very pleased that Vietnam has expressed solidarity with us, as well as with many other countries. Russia also cherishes the sacred memory of the Vietnamese international volunteer soldiers who sacrificed their lives in 1941-1942 to defend Moscow. Not everyone knows that; few people know about them.

In the 1930s, the Vietnamese Communist Party sent a group to study at the Eastern Communist University of Labor in the Soviet Union. And when war broke out, they participated in battles to defend the capital, Moscow.

This is truly a momentous event, affirming Vietnam's contribution to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Russia has always respected the heroism of the Vietnamese people in their fight against the American invaders.

You bravely unified the country and defended its independence. And we are very proud that during those difficult years, Russia stood by Vietnam and also contributed to the Vietnamese people's victory in 1975.

We must do everything to pass on this memory to the younger generation, to future generations, because those who cherish the past will confidently walk the path to the future. And this is what we must do; we have all the tools, and mass media in both Vietnam and Russia must play a major role in recounting these heroic chapters of history.

Writers, poets, filmmakers—everyone must bring this memory to readers, listeners, and viewers. We believe in and are ready to cooperate on this matter, including with Vietnam.

I understand that the Lunar New Year is approaching, so I would like to take this opportunity to send my best wishes for the New Year to all Vietnamese people!

Reporter: Thank you very much, sir!
