Russia raises tariffs on imports from 'unfriendly countries'

The decision was posted on Russia's official information portal on July 19, will take effect after 7 days and last until December 31, 2024.

According to VNA, the increase applies to items such as confectionery, biscuits, perfume, shampoo, detergents... The tax rate for these items is 35% of customs value.

The tax is set at 0.6 euros/kg for confectionery products containing cocoa, 0.73 euros/kg for chocolate candies, 0.35 euros/kg for biscuits containing cocoa or chocolate, as well as waffles... Wine and beer are also subject to the new tax rate of 20%.

Additionally, lead and other energy batteries have also been added to the list. The import duty on these products will be 35%. The 35% duty will apply to lead batteries and 50% will apply to plywood, wallpaper, some outerwear and zippers.

Import duties also increased on sporting and hunting guns, rocket launchers and ammunition, at 35%.

Previously, the list of goods from unfriendly countries subject to increased import duties into Russia included weapons, perfumes, alcohol, plywood, and wallpaper.

The press service of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development said that the government's decision will give an additional impetus to the development of Russian production, and will also help to further utilize excess production capacity.

According to the head of the Russian Federal Customs Service Valery Pikalev, in the first 6 months of 2024, customs duties in Russia increased by 500 billion rubles (more than 5.7 billion USD) compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 3,361 billion rubles.
