First memory
My colleague's sharing reminded me why I started and why, until now, I am still passionate about journalism - a profession where every step is a touch of life, a time to live fully with happy and sad moments, a hard job but has helped my heart to still be full of love after many collisions!
I don’t remember what my first article was, but I remember the first time I timidly entered the Quang Binh Newspaper Office on Tran Hung Dao Street with my best friend to… receive royalties after a period of collaboration. As soon as we arrived, we met a man coming out of the office. That was the first time I met journalist Nguyen The Thinh, who was then the Editorial Secretary of Quang Binh Newspaper, and also a contributor to Lao Dong Newspaper with many famous reports about Quang Binh.
Not long after, I was fortunate to become a member of Quang Binh Newspaper. Together with journalist Nguyen The Thinh, I had the opportunity to work with impressive faces of the journalism community at that time, such as: "The perfect pair" Minh Toan-Tung Lam, Van Phuc-Trong Thai, journalists Le Hong, Huu Thai, Tuyet Nhung... and many other colleagues. From them, I learned about the "legends" of Quang Binh journalism, such as: Journalist Do Quy Doan, former Editor-in-Chief of Quang Binh Newspaper, former Deputy Minister of Information and Communications; poet, journalist Nguyen Van Dinh, who could "speak poetry" in a flash!
Those were the years when we studied hard, immersed ourselves in the true atmosphere of journalism, full of passion and concern for each word. I learned from my colleagues how to “look” at life to choose new “slices”, how to write attractive headlines, how to write simply so that “grandmothers in the countryside can read and understand”... and also tips on cutting and pasting film to save the most when using a film camera. Those days, although lacking in material things, my heart was full of enthusiasm, faith and dreams of a career that could “change the world ”.
Fire of Memories
Not flashy, but full of charm, journalism guides me, helps me grow up every day, understand and sympathize with life and human destiny. Journalism gives me and my colleagues unforgettable memories. Those are the times working in storms, where picturesque villages are submerged in water; the silent tears when talking to fishermen in the midst of a "marine environmental incident"; the love and sorrow when witnessing the long procession of people returning home during the Covid-19 pandemic... Each news item, each photo contains so many thoughts and emotions!
But it was also in those places that I witnessed many beautiful things. Those were boats rushing through the raging flood to save people; soldiers who were not afraid of danger and were willing to sacrifice themselves to protect the people; the care and sharing of fishermen to overcome the “marine environmental incident” together; the lunch boxes and cakes that warmed the hearts of those returning home during the pandemic…
Until now, I still remember the image of the "white-shirt soldiers" on the front line against the epidemic, their faces deeply marked by masks after long shifts; the soldiers stationed at "Covid checkpoints" in the middle of the deep jungle. I also remember the bright smiles of the children when they held in their hands a cake, a package of dry food, a small but warm gift in the middle of a devastated house after the flood.
And we stood silently among the crowd of people saying goodbye to General Vo Nguyen Giap. The words sobbed with millions of hearts missing him. Amidst the infinite grief was also an indescribable pride at being able to work during this historic moment.
Journalism also gives me a lot of joy and pride. That is when I witness my homeland shining with flags and flowers; watching the vast “wind power fields” springing up in the middle of white sand; leisurely “gliding” on the roads and bridges connecting the two banks of hope; when Son Doong cave and Tan Hoa tourist village are marked on the world tourism map…
Memories of journalism are ordinary and simple, but they have helped me and my colleagues love, be proud of and have more confidence in our path!
New Journey
Like many other professions, journalism is facing great challenges as technology, social networks, artificial intelligence, etc. develop every day, creating a lot of pressure. For Quang Binh journalists and me personally, this is also a time to welcome many new things. In the "common home" of Quang Binh Newspaper and Radio-Television Station, we begin to learn and "take our first steps" on a new journey.
Despite many difficulties and hardships, we always carry with us a passionate heart for the profession, honesty, sincerity and social responsibility. On this happy day, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the previous generations of journalists; send my trust and expectations to my young colleagues; sincerely thank the characters who have appeared in each article and the readers who have always accompanied, trusted and welcomed us.
Because of all these beautiful things, we journalists, on our new journey, will not hesitate to continue!
