People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh was born in 1941. She is the great-granddaughter of Tuy Ly Vuong - the eleventh son of Emperor Minh Mang - and the youngest daughter of Pham Khac Hoe, a high-ranking official of the Nguyen Dynasty during the reign of Emperor Bao Dai - who played a major role in persuading Emperor Bao Dai to abdicate.
Inheriting a love of literature and art from her parents, People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh harbored a dream of pursuing art from a young age. At 14, she joined the Central Performing Arts Troupe, where she had the opportunity to meet and later marry People's Artist Dao Mong Long.
In 1970, she was sent by the State to Russia to study stage directing. After returning from seven years of study, she and director Ha Nhan drafted a proposal to establish the Youth Theatre.
In 1987, the Youth Theatre was officially established, with director Ha Nhan serving as Director and People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh as Deputy Director. Besides her position as Director of the Youth Theatre (1991-1996), People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh also held many other positions, such as Deputy Director of the Department of Performing Arts, Vice President of the UNESCO Association of Vietnam, and member of the Executive Board of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations…
Having dedicated her entire life to Vietnamese theater, she amassed a vast legacy by directing over 200 plays, including nearly 20 that won Gold Medals and several that won Silver Medals.
In particular, by "unlocking" the creative potential of the genius playwright Luu Quang Vu, People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh collaborated with him to bring a vibrant energy to the domestic stage with dozens of impressive plays such as: Living Forever at 17, The Last Summer, The Pure Heart, The King Who Turned into a Tiger, The Good Man at House Number 5…

People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh has passed away, but her legacy, spirit, and love for the stage are being nurtured and continued by her colleagues and students, ensuring that the flow of Vietnamese theater remains rich and connected to audiences for generations.
