Van Y entered the Road to UFC bantamweight semifinals with confidence, actively throwing high kicks to put pressure on Lawrence Lui. The Bac Ninh native even made his opponent wary with a dangerous high kick in the first round, but also nearly received a sharp counterattack from the New Zealander.
"Easy Y" (nickname Van Y) continued to use a flexible moving style, trying to score points with kicks, while his punches did not make a difference. At the end of the first round, Lawrence Lui started to speed up, forcing Van Y against the cage but could not finish the match.
In the second round, Nghiem Van Y remained loyal to his kicks to maintain the game, while Lawrence Lui tried to get close, using his ability to hug to limit the strength of the Vietnamese fighter. The match was balanced until Van Y was caught off guard and received a heavy punch from his opponent.
Lawrence Lui immediately rushed in and threw a series of "rice pounding" punches as Van Y fell to the floor. The referee was forced to stop the match, confirming the knockout victory for Lawrence Lui. With this defeat, Nghiem Van Y stopped in the semi-finals, while Lawrence Lui won a ticket to the final to meet Sulang Rangbo (China) or Sim Kai Xiong (Singapore).
