(Dan Tri Newspaper) - The Chameleon AI model can add digital masks to protect images from facial recognition tools.

A team of researchers has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can protect users from facial scanning used by hackers and scammers to access personal information and digital accounts.
This tool is called Chameleon.
Chameleon works by "masking" the user's face through the creation of a hidden mask; this artificial intelligence model is optimized for data, allowing it to be used on low-performance technology devices.
This AI model was published in the journal arXiv by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech, USA).
It will help users protect their identities from facial scanning attempts by hackers and AI data-collecting bots.
Professor Ling Liu, from the Department of Intelligent Computing Data at Georgia Tech's School of Computer Science , stated: "Sharing data and analytics that protect privacy, like Chameleon, will help promote governance, responsible adoption of AI technology, and create momentum in science with innovation and accountability."
After the mask pattern is applied, facial recognition tools are unable to detect the image because the scanning process will display it "as someone else".
In fact, similar AI tools already exist, but Chameleon is greatly improved with features like data optimization and higher image security quality.
Researchers emphasize that, instead of using separate masks for each photo, the tool creates a mask for each user based on a few facial photos updated by the user.
One of the challenges with this tool is preserving image quality; researchers used a darkening technique to optimize the "perception" of Chameleon.
It will automatically render the mask without any manual intervention or parameter settings, thus allowing the AI to maintain overall image quality.
This is an AI tool aimed at protecting privacy, and researchers revealed that they soon plan to release the Chameleon code publicly on GitHub, open source, which developers can then integrate into their applications.
