According to BGR , after much speculation, Microsoft has officially 'given the green light' to charge users for AI features on Notepad. This means that if users want to experience the Rewrite features using artificial intelligence (AI), they will have to pay for the Microsoft 365 package.

Using AI feature on Notepad will cost money

Pay for Notepad if you want to use AI

The legendary Notepad text editor, which has been associated with the Windows operating system since its early days, now cannot escape Microsoft's commercialization 'vortex'.

While the basic functions of Notepad are still completely free, if users want to use premium features like AI-powered Rewrite, they will have to pay to become a Microsoft 365 user.

The way Microsoft entices users to pay for AI features on Notepad has also caused controversy. Many people believe that constantly displaying advertising banners, asking users to subscribe to Microsoft 365 to use AI is no different from disguised advertising. This makes users feel uncomfortable, especially when Microsoft has just increased the price of the Microsoft 365 package.

Microsoft argues that Rewrite and other AI features are just add-ons, not core functionality of Notepad. However, many disagree with this view. They argue that AI is becoming an integral part of modern applications and charging for these features is unreasonable.

Microsoft's move to charge users for AI on Windows Notepad shows that the company is increasingly focused on monetizing its services and features. However, Microsoft's approach is controversial and could impact the user experience.
