On July 3, social media was abuzz with a clip recording a man using a remote-controlled plane to fly into the middle of the river to safely transport two children stranded in the middle of the Ba River to shore.
Talking to us, Mr. Pham Van Duc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ia Tul commune ( Gia Lai province) confirmed that the clip circulating on the internet was an incident that happened at noon on July 3 on the Ba River, flowing through Buon Ju village, Ia Tul commune.
At that time, the children were herding cows on the opposite bank of the river. At noon, when they were herding the cows back home, the river water from upstream rushed in strongly. In just a few minutes, the river water rose nearly 1 meter, causing the 3 children to be trapped on a sandbar right in the middle of the river.
Seeing the dangerous situation, people shouted to each other to rescue. Some people tried to swim to the middle of the river to save them but failed because of the strong current. At that time, Mr. Tran Van Nghia (born in 1990, residing in Chu Se commune, Gia Lai province) who was renting land to grow sweet potatoes on the riverbank quickly used a remote-controlled plane (used to spray pesticides) to fly to the middle of the river and successfully brought 2 children to shore. The remaining child was rescued by people rowing a boat out to rescue and brought to shore safely.
Mr. Nghia said that the distance from the riverbank to the location where the children were trapped was about 50m, the water was flowing so fast that no one dared to swim out to save them. Meanwhile, the remote-controlled plane had a permitted load of 50kg, and the propeller was strong, so I was afraid that the children would panic and let go in the middle of the river.
“I had to tie more ropes to the base of the plane so the children could wrap themselves around themselves. Luckily, I and the people around were able to bring them safely to shore,” said Mr. Nghia.
After the clip of the rescue of children stuck in the middle of the river by a remote-controlled plane went viral, many netizens expressed their admiration for Mr. Nghia's quick thinking. Many people left comments that if it had been just a few minutes later, the river water could have completely submerged the children, and who knows what would have happened.
