Quang Ngai Provincial General Hospital has put into operation a hemoglobin electrophoresis machine to serve the screening of thalassemia. To date, approximately 500 test samples have been processed, helping to detect hemoglobin abnormalities and identify carriers of the disease gene early.
According to doctors, thalassemia is a genetic disease that can cause patients to suffer from chronic anemia, requiring blood transfusions and lifelong treatment. In some severe cases, there is a risk of death in the womb if not detected early.
Health experts recommend that people undergo premarital and prenatal screening tests to receive appropriate advice and reduce the risk of their children being born with severe illnesses.
In addition to testing, Quang Ngai Provincial General Hospital also conducts research to assess the current status of carriers of the disease gene in the community, thereby proposing solutions to control and reduce the incidence of the disease in the locality.
Proactive screening and early counseling are considered effective solutions to limit the incidence of thalassemia, contributing to improving the quality of the population in the future.
