Early recognition of signs of autism in children

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder ranging from mild to severe, usually with onset before age 3.

According to the National Children's Hospital ( Hanoi ), the main characteristics of autism spectrum disorder are difficulty in social interaction and communication, and restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests.

Manifestations vary by age.

Autism manifests differently in children at each stage of development. Therefore, parents need to be aware of the signs to detect the condition promptly and take appropriate intervention measures, leading to a better quality of life for their children.

In children under 12 months old , common signs of autism include: lack of facial expressions of interest; lack of eye contact; not responding when called by name; not turning to look at the source of a sound; and not startling when hearing a loud noise.

The children also do not show interest in games that other children usually play and enjoy; they do not babble or make sounds like laughter or crying when they are happy or angry about something; and they do not use gestures (such as reaching out their hands to their parents when they want to be held).

For toddlers aged 12-24 months, common signs of autism include: lack of gestures (pointing, waving, shaking hands, eye contact, smiling in response); not babbling by 12 months; not using single words by 16 months...

In children with signs of autism, at this age group, they may seem to ignore or not pay attention to those around them; constantly repeat a certain body movement or action; walk on tiptoes or be unable to walk; or have lost language or social skills.

Signs of autism in children aged 2 and older : Children have difficulty communicating with the community and prefer to withdraw into their own world , playing less or showing less interest in other children their age. They only like to play with a few specific objects, observing their shapes and colors but not paying attention to the function of these objects; they lack creative imagination in play and learning activities.

These children also lack the ability to adapt to changes in their daily routines and surroundings, and demand that everyone follow a certain schedule. They may be resistant, uncooperative, or overactive, hyperactive, impulsive, or aggressive.

DEVELOPING MOTOR SKILLS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

According to the Department of Psychiatry at the National Children's Hospital, studies show that most autistic children have difficulties in motor coordination such as throwing and catching, using their hands skillfully; they may have difficulty regulating body movements and balance; and they may have an abnormal gait (short steps, uneven body oscillations, strange arm swings, frequent tiptoeing...).

Motor skills difficulties directly impact the ability of autistic children to participate in intervention activities as well as learn cognitive, language, and social interaction skills.

Dr. Thanh Ngoc Minh, Head of the Psychiatry Department at the Central Children's Hospital, advises parents to monitor their children's motor development from infancy to detect early signs of motor difficulties. They should take their children for a check-up immediately upon noticing any problems with motor skills. Parents should create opportunities for children to use motor skills in daily life, reduce screen time, and always participate in and support their children throughout their childhood to help them build confidence and provide better support.
