Samsung Electronics made this decision because they were concerned that data uploaded to platforms such as ChatGPT and Bing would be stored on external servers, making it difficult to delete, and could potentially be disclosed to other users.

In April 2023, the company conducted a survey on the use of AI tools internally, and more than 60% of respondents said that such services pose risks. Earlier last month, Samsung engineers accidentally leaked internal source code when uploading it to ChatGPT, but it is unclear what information it contained.
A Samsung representative confirmed a memo was sent last week banning the use of general AI services.
Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s largest makers of memory chips and smartphones, is the latest company to join the growing list of organizations that have banned employees from using generative AI tools on their work devices. In recent months, several major financial firms, including Goldman Sachs, have decided to ban or restrict employees from using similar platforms.
Several Wall Street banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co, Bank of America Corp and Citigroup Inc banned or restricted use of the service in February. Italy also banned ChatGPT over privacy concerns, although it reversed its stance in recent days.
Samsung has warned employees using ChatGPT and other tools on personal devices not to send any company-related information or personal data that could reveal intellectual property. Violators will be fired.
In addition to developing its own internal AI tools for document translation and summarization and software development, Samsung is looking to block the upload of sensitive corporate information to external services. Last month, ChatGPT added an “incognito” mode that allows users to block their chats from being used to train AI models.
