Ukraine's standard infantry rifle is being upgraded with a new 5.56mm round designed to destroy threats from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The projectile is said to be capable of fragmenting in mid-air to enhance its ability to shoot down a UAV.

The new 5.56mm round, the most common caliber used by Ukrainian infantry units, will be equipped with a custom-made warhead that explodes when fired, sending fragments in multiple directions instead of penetrating straight through like conventional bullets.

Ukrainian officials did not describe or provide any information about the ammunition, but it is believed that such ammunition designs require a large caliber. Standard rifles using the basic 5.56 caliber ammunition can meet the requirements.

This allows soldiers to directly engage fast-moving drones and reconnaissance UAVs with conventional infantry rifles without any additional modifications.

Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov The goal of the 5.56mm anti-UAV round is to "provide every infantryman with at least one round," he said, adding that it provides them with "the ultimate defense" against airborne threats on the battlefield.

Brave1, Ukraine's defense innovation cluster and manufacturer of 5.56mm anti-drone ammunition, has announced that the rounds have been coded for use and are ready for widespread deployment on the front lines.

Drones pose a challenge to infantry units due to their speed, size, and maneuverability.

Their unpredictable flight patterns often make them difficult to detect with traditional air defense systems.

The development of the Brave1 anti-drone munition is Ukraine's solution to the growing use of UAV systems in the conflict with Russia.

While Ukraine already uses a range of advanced anti-drone systems, the upgraded 5.56mm round gives soldiers a direct-fire option when speed is of the essence.

“They significantly increase the chances of hitting an FPV drone before it can attack,” Minister Fedorov added.
