Dong Xam silver carving village (Tra Giang commune, Hung Yen province; formerly Hong Thai commune, Kien Xuong district, Thai Binh province) is located on the right bank of the gentle Dong Giang river. Like many other villages in Vietnam, the village has a very peaceful atmosphere.

Coming to Dong Xam village, you will hear the sounds of chiseling, carving, and engraving echoing everywhere. The familiar sounds of traditional craft villages, preserved, help bring income to the people here.

According to the locals, silver carving is a traditional profession that has existed for hundreds of years. This profession requires the artisans to be patient, persistent and meticulous in every small detail.

Making a complete silver carving product takes a lot of time and up to 10 different stages, but carving is the most difficult technique, determining the sophistication of the product. There are elaborate products that take a whole year to complete.

Having been involved in the traditional craft for more than 40 years, Mr. Nguyen The Dan (from Dong Xam village) shared: "Born and raised in this craft village, those of us who work in the profession are used to hearing the sound of carving and chiseling every day. Silver carvings are often handmade, sometimes engraved or embossed, sometimes simple, delicate, and gentle, sometimes elaborate and detailed; requiring the craftsman's skill and creativity."

Nowadays, in addition to silver carvings, Dong Xam also has products made from copper. The products are very diverse and are divided into 3 main groups: worshiping and decorative items; household items and jewelry.

Chairman of Dong Xam Silver Carving Village Association Trieu Dang Khoa said that in the past, 70-80% of the people in Dong Xam village were engaged in handicrafts, but now only about 40% remain. Currently, Dong Xam silver carving products are available in many places across the country and are exported abroad.
