Japan will support island nations with telecommunications infrastructure.

This is Japan's effort to increase its involvement in the South Pacific , an area with many undersea communication cables connecting East Asia, the United States and Australia.

Funding will come from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan’s international cooperation budget. It is expected that several billion yen (equivalent to several hundred billion VND) of public-private investment will be mobilized in the first two years.

Pacific island nations are using equipment from Chinese telecom giant Huawei for their mainland networks. However, the US claims Huawei has ties to the Chinese military and poses a security risk. Huawei has denied the allegations.
