Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant: Pioneering plant applying ultra-supercritical technology

(Dan Tri) - Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant is not only the thermal power project with the largest capacity in the country, but also one of the pioneering projects applying ultra-supercritical (USC) technology.

This is an important technological step forward in the journey to improve power generation efficiency, reduce emissions and protect the environment, towards sustainable development.

Technology Highlights

As a key national power source project, Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant (TPP) is invested with USC (Ultra-Supercritical) technology by Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN).

According to Mr. Do Thanh Tai - Deputy Director of Power Project Management Board 2 - USC technology is being widely applied by developed countries such as Japan, the US, and Europe thanks to its outstanding performance and strict emission control, meeting high standards of quality and environmental protection.

Specifically, the use of steam at supercritical steam parameters increases the efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle, making the conversion of heat energy into electricity more efficient and reducing emissions, especially CO2.

At the same time, the entire main equipment system is designed and installed according to European standards, ensuring that emission indicators are always within the allowable limits of Vietnam and the World Bank (WB).

With a scale of 2 units with a total capacity of 1,403 MW, Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant is currently the largest thermal power plant in the country. This is the first plant to use boiler steel structures manufactured by a domestic enterprise (AMECC), with a steel volume of up to 21,000 tons/2 boilers. The installed 500kV main transformer weighs 496 tons (excluding 200 tons of transformer oil), among the largest in Vietnam. To serve the construction, contractors mobilized a 1,250-ton super-heavy crane and a series of other modern equipment.

Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant has also been invested by EVN in public and transparent environmental monitoring technology. When put into operation, the plant's emissions and wastewater data parameters will be continuously monitored and transmitted online 24/7 to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quang Tri province for monitoring according to regulations. At the same time, this data will also be publicly displayed on a large screen at the factory gate for people in the surrounding area to monitor and supervise, demonstrating EVN's strong commitment to environmental protection, contributing to building the image of a modern, friendly and community-connected power plant.

Prepare quality human resources for operations

By the end of July, the overall progress of the Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant project had reached over 94%. Contractors and construction units are focusing all their human resources and equipment to complete key items, ensuring the target of first oil combustion of Unit 1 on August 19.

To prepare the workforce to be ready to receive, master modern technology and effectively operate Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant, EVNPMB2 coordinated with thermal power plants in EVN to deploy an intensive training program for positions. Training sessions took place continuously at the thermal power plants, with a duration of 3 to 4.5 months depending on the position, combining both theory and practice. At the same time, the team of engineers, shift leaders, crew leaders, on-duty staff, etc. also participated in the internal training program directly at the construction site.

The Power Project Management Board 2 also sent trainees in the position of plant shift leaders to participate in the operation certification training course organized by the National Power System and Electricity Market Operation Company. Currently, these personnel have been assigned to participate in the trial power receiving shift work with the contractor at the project site.

This is an important preparation step, contributing to building an operating team with both a solid theoretical foundation and proficient practical skills, ready to take on tasks as soon as the factory completes the testing and handover process.

When officially put into operation, Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant will not only add a significant amount of electricity to the national power system, but also create a driving force for socio -economic development in the Central region, contributing to realizing Vietnam's sustainable development goals.
