Many new question formats

TP – Although the 2025 10th grade entrance exam plan has not yet been announced, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has published the exam structure and format based on the new general education program so that schools and students can closely follow the teaching and learning guidelines and develop test and assessment questions.

The 2024-2025 school year will be the first year that 9th-grade students take the entrance exam to high school under the 2018 General Education Program with a new approach and a new exam structure and format.

After three months of preparation, yesterday (August 29), the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced the exam structure for subjects under the new curriculum, which will serve as the basis for building the question bank and creating exam papers for the 10th grade entrance exam next year.

A new feature of the sample test is the increased variety of multiple-choice question formats, including: multiple-choice questions with four options; true/false questions where each question has four parts, and the candidate chooses either true or false for each part; and short-answer questions.

Another new feature in the upcoming 10th grade entrance exam is the introduction of two new integrated subjects: Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and History – Geography.

Previously, these subjects were tested individually, but under the new curriculum, the five subjects are integrated into two, therefore the exam questions will also be designed as integrated. In Natural Sciences, knowledge will be spread across three subjects with 40 questions. History and Geography also have 40 questions at the levels of recognition, comprehension, and application.

Requires application of practical knowledge.

According to Ms. Hoang Tu Uyen, Head of the Foreign Language Department at Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School (Hanoi), the sample exam structure, in addition to familiar questions, includes many completely new question types such as: requiring the arrangement and selection of sentences to form a complete paragraph; requiring the rephrasing of instructions on signs and notices; or filling in part or all of a sentence in the blank to complete a paragraph…

According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training, provinces and cities have the right to decide on the methods and timing of entrance exams for the first grade. At this time, students and schools are eagerly awaiting the exam plan. However, only Quang Nam has announced its plan for the 10th grade entrance exam. Students will take exams in three subjects: Literature, Mathematics, and Foreign Language, combined with their academic records from the four years of junior high school.

According to Ms. Uyen, the sample exam closely follows the new curriculum's orientation towards developing students' competencies and qualities, requiring students to apply a lot of practical knowledge to solve problems.

The proportion of single-question tests has decreased, replaced by new question types that assess knowledge, reading comprehension, information analysis, and logical thinking in organizing and developing ideas. Error-finding questions have disappeared, and questions testing communicative function and synonym/antonym identification have been reduced from two to one question.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam, a math teacher at Giang Vo Secondary School in Ba Dinh district (Hanoi), said: "The difference compared to previous exams is that there is an added section on statistics and probability; there are more problems related to solving real-world issues; and it requires the application of interdisciplinary knowledge."

Regarding the Literature subject, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang Nga, Head of the Literature Department at Hoai Duc B High School (Hanoi), assessed that there are many new points similar to the sample exam for the high school graduation exam, however, the level of knowledge required is not too difficult. With the new sample exam, teachers will teach students the knowledge and skills to answer the questions without using materials from the textbook, as required at the beginning of the school year by the Ministry of Education and Training.
