- Every time the rainy season arrives, the people of Hamlet 6, Khang Chien Commune, live in constant fear as their daily commutes depend on makeshift rafts. In addition, the lack of clean water for daily use significantly impacts their lives.
Village 6 in Khang Chien commune is located about 4 km from National Highway 4A. From the main road, we followed a small, winding concrete path through the forests for another 1 km to reach the village center.

We were greeted by Mr. Hoang The Anh, Party Secretary and Head of Village 6. During our conversation, he couldn't hide his concerns about the difficulties the villagers are facing. He confided: "The village currently has 100 households with over 450 inhabitants. Due to the terrain being divided by the river and the lack of a sturdy bridge, the villagers face many difficulties in transportation and production. This is especially true for households in the Ban Tap cluster – the residential area on the other side of the river – where all daily activities and trade depend on rafts made of bamboo and reeds, posing many dangers."
The concerns of the head of Hamlet 6 are also shared by many households in the hamlet. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuoi, a resident of Hamlet 6, said: "My family has two plots of abandoned rice fields on the other side of the river. For farmers like us, every inch of land is precious, and having to leave the fields abandoned like this is truly heartbreaking. However, I have no choice but to accept it because transporting machinery and supplies across the river for cultivation is very dangerous."
Besides transportation difficulties, residents of Hamlet 6 are also facing a shortage of clean water for daily use. Most households have to rely on stream water, while a few families with better resources have drilled wells. This situation is even more serious in the Ban Tap cluster, where many families still have to use river water for all their daily needs, from irrigation to cooking and washing.
Quickly scooping river water into plastic containers, Mr. Luong Van Toai, a resident of Ban Tap hamlet, said: "Here, people can only use stream water during the three months of the rainy season; for almost the entire year, we have to depend on river water. Although we know it's not hygienic and can easily cause skin diseases and digestive problems, we still have to use it because there's no other water source."
This situation is not unique to Mr. Toai's family; it affects most households in the Ban Tap cluster. Mr. Hoang The Anh, Party Secretary and Head of Village 6, added: "The lack of clean water greatly impacts the lives and health of the people. Furthermore, difficulties in transportation make life even harder for the residents of Ban Tap cluster, especially during the rainy season."
Faced with these difficulties, the people have repeatedly petitioned at village meetings and voter consultations, hoping that the authorities at all levels will pay attention and invest in essential infrastructure such as bridges across rivers and clean water supply facilities.
Regarding this issue, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Khang Chien Commune, said: The commune's People's Committee has fully grasped the requests of the people in Hamlet 6. In the past, the commune government has compiled reports and submitted them to higher authorities, proposing the allocation of resources to invest in the construction of a bridge and a domestic water supply system. However, due to limited budget, implementation has not yet been possible. In the future, the commune government will continue to request that relevant levels and sectors prioritize investment in essential infrastructure projects to gradually alleviate difficulties and stabilize the lives of the people. At the same time, the commune will intensify propaganda and guidance for people to apply water treatment methods; and call for and provide support in the form of life jackets and other means of transportation (boats, rafts, etc.) to minimize risks and ensure the safety of people while awaiting investment.
Although many challenges still lie ahead, with the attention of local authorities and departments, it is hoped that in the near future, the infrastructure bottleneck in Hamlet 6 will be resolved, so that the lives of the people here will gradually become more stable and safer.
