From old ways of doing things to new ways of thinking.

Early in the morning, on his 4-hectare shrimp pond, Mr. Le Van Linh, residing in Hamlet 14, Vinh Thuan Commune, is busy fertilizing to promote the growth of algae as a natural food source and to stabilize the water environment for shrimp and crab farming. Mr. Linh explained that previously, extensive shrimp farming in Vinh Thuan relied mainly on experience and was heavily dependent on nature, resulting in low and unstable yields. Instead of relying on luck, many farmers began attending training courses on applying science and technology, and learning from successful models. As a result, an improved extensive shrimp farming model was formed and quickly replicated in the locality. "Previously, I raised them by simply releasing them into the ponds and waiting for them to grow naturally. Now, I have to renovate the ponds, manage the water source, use biological products to create a natural food source, and carefully select the fry... Thanks to doing it the right way, the shrimp are healthy, grow quickly, and are less prone to disease," Linh said.

Many farmers in Vinh Thuan commune know how to apply improved solutions, doubling or even tripling the productivity of shrimp and crab farming thanks to higher stocking densities. In particular, the improved extensive farming model helps reduce risks and stabilize income. “In Vinh Thuan now, most agricultural practices apply science and technology. For example, rice cultivation, from land preparation, sowing, spraying pesticides to harvesting… everything is mechanized. For shrimp farming , they adhere to biological processes to produce clean shrimp with higher economic value. In addition, people combine shrimp and crab farming to utilize natural food sources, increasing economic efficiency on the same area. Thanks to the shrimp - crab-rice farming model , farmers earn over 100 million VND /hectare/ year , ” Mr. Linh shared .

Not content with the traditional shrimp - rice farming model , people in Vinh Thuan are boldly experimenting with new approaches . Instead of raising crabs naturally , Mr. Nguyen Huy Khoa, residing in Hamlet 3, invested in a system of cement tanks , applying water recirculation technology , which has yielded quite high economic efficiency . According to Mr. Khoa , with this model , the water in the tanks is filtered and recirculated through a biological treatment system , creating a consistently stable environment . In addition, farmers can proactively manage their food sources and reduce disease outbreaks . As a result, the crabs grow faster and have a higher survival rate compared to traditional farming methods. "With each ^12m² tank, I raise up to 500 crabs. Using this model alone, I sell several tons of crabs to the market each year, at a price of over 250 million VND per ton," Mr. Khoa said.

Sustainable path

The story of shrimp and crab farming in Vinh Thuan commune shows that innovation is not only the "key" to unlocking development opportunities, but also the inevitable direction for remote areas to rise. According to Mr. Huynh Ngoc Nguyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Thuan commune, innovation in remote areas stems from the needs of daily life . It involves changing the mindset from " working according to habit " to " working according to science " to enhance product value. Furthermore, local people have learned to form cooperatives, build brands, establish traceability systems, and link product consumption; utilizing digital platforms to promote and sell online, expanding markets. These changes have helped increase product value and create more stable livelihoods for the people. “In recent times, the locality has focused on transforming the structure of crops and livestock to suit local conditions. We have developed models for high-quality rice production and aquaculture in a safe, biological manner. We have promoted the application of science, technology, and synchronized mechanization in production, reducing costs and increasing product value. At the same time, we have leveraged resources to invest in infrastructure serving production, aiming for a harmonious and sustainable rural ecosystem, especially to increase people's income,” said Mr. Huynh Ngoc Nguyen.

Vinh Thuan also guides and encourages farmers to shift their mindset from agricultural production to green agriculture, circular agriculture, cooperatives, and businesses investing in technological innovation, applying safe, organic, and circular production processes to increase value . Simultaneously, the commune is gradually building "digital agriculture" and "digital raw material zones" models in suitable hamlets, linked to traceability and connecting product consumption through e-commerce platforms… contributing to improving productivity and product quality, reducing costs, protecting the environment, and improving people's lives.
