15 years of dedicated teaching in ethnic minority communities.
With her tireless efforts in teaching, Ms. Ly Hoa Ly has been honored with Certificates of Merit from the Committee for Ethnic Minorities and the Ministry of Education and Training for her achievements in educating ethnic minority students in particularly disadvantaged areas.
Da Bac is a remote commune in Ca Mau province, home to a large ethnic minority population. The Danh Thi Tuoi Ethnic Boarding Secondary School is located within the commune, a school where Ms. Ly Hoa Ly has been associated for the past 15 years. Ms. Ly is also of Khmer ethnicity, born and raised in the area.
According to Ms. Ly, over the years, thanks to the attention and care of the Party and the State, the lives of the Khmer ethnic minority people in Ca Mau province have seen positive changes. However, there is still a segment of the population who, due to difficult circumstances, have not paid enough attention to their children's education.
Most of the ethnic minority students at the school have parents who work far from home, leaving them to be cared for by grandparents or other relatives. The grandparents are elderly and therefore have little interest in their children's studies, leaving most of the children to rely on the teachers.
"During the teaching process, I and the other teachers at the school have to understand each student's circumstances and categorize their abilities into groups to teach effectively. Because even within the same class, the students' academic abilities are not uniform due to different family circumstances and learning conditions."
"For students with weak academic abilities or difficult circumstances, I pay even more attention to them, teaching them more so that they can quickly catch up with the curriculum and be capable of moving up to the next grade. At the same time, I regularly share, help, and encourage them so that they don't get discouraged or drop out of school," Ms. Ly shared her experience.
In addition to teaching academic knowledge, Ms. Ly Hoa Ly also educates students about moral values, preserving and promoting national cultural identity.
"Many ethnic minority students are not well-behaved and are unruly when they enter the school, partly because they live far from their parents and lack close supervision. Teachers themselves must always treat students like their own children and grandchildren, constantly caring for and listening to their thoughts and feelings, gradually correcting their bad habits and vices, helping them to be well-behaved and diligent in their studies," Ms. Ly said.
Danh Thi Sa Thia, a 9th-grade student at the school, said: “There was a time when I considered dropping out of school to help my family, but my teacher encouraged me to continue studying. I will strive to study hard to achieve my goal of going to university and becoming a teacher for children in ethnic minority areas, just like the teachers have taught us,” Sa Thia said.

Bringing technology to students in remote areas.
Ms. Tran Thi My (born in 1974), an English teacher at Bac Lieu High School (Ca Mau province), has nearly 30 years of teaching experience. Throughout her career, Ms. My has implemented numerous innovative ideas and initiatives to improve the quality of education. In particular, she has utilized technology and artificial intelligence (AI) as a bridge to help students in remote areas access knowledge.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when online teaching was still unfamiliar to many teachers and students in rural areas, Ms. Tran Thi My and her colleagues founded the "Mekong Creative Teachers" group to share technology skills and online teaching methods with teachers in remote areas. Under Ms. My's dedicated guidance, many teachers overcame their anxieties about "teaching through a screen" and confidently used technology to maintain their students' learning pace.
During that time, Ms. My also spoke at the Viettesol 2021 online English teaching conference, sharing her experience in innovating teaching methods to help students feel that online learning is as familiar and engaging as in a real classroom.
"Students in remote areas have very limited access to information technology. With my existing English skills, I've been able to access foreign news sources and software... My goal is to spread awareness and help colleagues and students utilize technology to make teaching and learning more convenient and improve the quality of education," Ms. My shared.
Ms. Tran Thi My's thirst for knowledge did not stop after the pandemic. From 2022 to the present, she has continuously attended seminars and presented scientific papers at major universities nationwide related to the application of technology and artificial intelligence in teaching English.
Her research topics have received positive feedback from professionals because they are highly practical, easily accessible to students in remote areas, and demonstrate the great dedication of an educator who always places students at the center of all innovation.
To date, Ms. My has had 5 international scientific papers published. For many years, she has been recognized by Microsoft globally as an Innovative Education Expert. She has also been selected as an ambassador for ClassDojo – a teaching and learning management application; and as a Super Trainer for Quizizz – an effective teaching application…
Not only is she a pioneer in applying technology, Ms. Tran Thi My is also loved by her students for her positive spirit, creative teaching style, and inspiring way of learning English. Many students who were previously weak in English have improved their knowledge after being mentored and taught by Ms. My, with many of them successfully passing the university entrance exam for English Language majors.
A typical example is Ngo Hoang Gia Bao, a student in class 12C4 at Bac Lieu High School. Previously, he was very weak in English and dreaded English lessons, but with the encouragement and enthusiastic guidance from Ms. My, he gradually developed a love for and improved his English skills.
“Ms. My’s teaching methods are very innovative and engaging. For students who are struggling academically, she has a personalized tutoring approach, incorporating games, guiding them on how to self-study, and building confidence in English communication… all of which helps me improve quickly,” Gia Bao said.
"For me, students only truly learn well when they feel happy and confident that they can. I pay even more attention to students who are struggling, those with special needs, or those who are not doing well academically. I don't want any of my students to be left behind in their journey of conquering knowledge in the digital age," shared Ms. Tran Thi My.
