New technologies at the Quynh Lap LNG Plant

In the context of a strong energy transition, LNG power projects are playing an increasingly important role in ensuring energy security while reducing emissions. The Quynh Lap LNG Thermal Power Plant project (Nghe An province) is not only significant in terms of scale and strategic location, but is also expected to become a model for the application of advanced technology in electricity production, contributing to shaping a clean and efficient energy system for Vietnam in the future.

The project's highlight lies in the seamless integration of the LNG technology chain: from receiving, storing, and regasifying to power generation. Imported LNG fuel is transported by specialized vessels and received at modern seaports, then channeled through a high-temperature insulated pipeline system, ensuring safety and minimizing energy loss.

Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 serve as stepping stones and a foundation for PV Power to implement large-scale LNG power projects in the future.

In the storage area, LNG is stored in large-capacity tanks, up to approximately 250,000 m³, at a temperature of -162 degrees Celsius using advanced double-walled tank technology, which helps maintain the fuel's stability before it is introduced into the regasification process. Furthermore, the entire Quỳnh Lập LNG system is designed according to international standards to ensure high operational safety while meeting stringent environmental and emission requirements.

The core technology of Quynh Lap LNG is the new generation Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT). This is a leading-edge technology in the field of gas-fired power generation, allowing for maximum utilization of energy from fuel. The operation process begins with regasification of LNG into the combustion chamber of the gas turbine to generate electricity. The residual heat from this process is not wasted but is recovered to produce steam, operating a second steam turbine to generate additional electricity. Thanks to this "two-cycle" mechanism, the plant's power generation efficiency can reach over 60% – significantly higher than traditional thermal power plants. In addition, this technology helps reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 40% compared to coal-fired power plants, while also significantly minimizing other pollutants, aligning with Vietnam's green development goals and Net Zero commitments.

In particular, with an expected output of approximately 9 billion kWh per year, the plant will not only meet the electricity needs of the North Central region but also contribute to reducing the pressure of electricity shortages in the North in the coming years.

The convergence of three investors – PV Power, Nghe An Sugar Company Limited, and SK Innovation Co., Ltd. – represents not only a combination of resources but also a synergy of experience, technology, and development vision. All three companies possess the reputation and financial capacity to ensure project progress, contributing to elevating the project and aiming for modern, efficient, and sustainable energy development. Participating in a large-scale, high-tech project like the Quynh Lap LNG project further affirms PV Power's role in the gas-fired power sector and demonstrates the company's proactive approach to energy transition, gradually approaching and mastering advanced technologies worldwide .
