Earning billions of dong from products made from sedge and water hyacinth.
Driven by passion and perseverance, Ms. Pham Thi Ngan in Trung Tien village, Tien Hai commune, has quietly revived the local handicraft village. Starting with a few simple handcrafted products, she continuously learned and improved designs, bringing her products to the international market and creating jobs for thousands of rural workers.
Initially, due to a lack of production capital and limited access to larger markets, Ms. Ngan only produced individual handcrafted items. In 2004, she boldly established Tay An Handicraft Production and Import-Export Company Limited. Ms. Ngan stated: "The products are all made from natural, environmentally friendly materials, woven from sedge, water hyacinth, and wool yarn, making them popular with foreign customers. To meet the stringent demands of the market, I have to search for and design many unique patterns and directly instruct workers on how to make them."
Currently, Ms. Ngan is creating jobs for many workers with an average income of 3.5 - 6 million VND/person/month. To date, the company has approximately 300 product samples exported to markets such as the Philippines, Germany, and France. On average, the company exports products worth approximately 30 billion VND annually. With a systematic and scientific approach, in the last 5 years, the company's products have been honored by the Ministry of Industry and Trade as outstanding national rural products. In 2023, the company's main products, a set of handicrafts made from sedge including: sedge baskets with diagonal floral patterns, sedge baskets embroidered with buffalo eye patterns, and sedge baskets with rainbow patterns, were recognized as 4-star OCOP products. In 2016, Ms. Pham Thi Ngan was awarded the title of Outstanding Artisan by the President of Vietnam.
Ms. Pham Thi Ngan's handicraft production model not only helps revive traditional craft villages but also elevates the value of local handicraft products, while contributing to bringing Vietnamese products to the international market.
Successful entrepreneurship starting from the garment industry.
Daring to think big, daring to act, overcoming difficulties, seeking opportunities to escape poverty, and rising to wealth through her own hands and mind – that is the journey of Ms. Pham Thi Ha in Lai Thanh Bac village, Tien Hai commune, when she started her business in the garment industry.
Visiting Ms. Ha's garment factory, we were truly impressed by the dynamism and determination of this young woman. Despite being busy instructing the workers, she enthusiastically and cheerfully shared her entrepreneurial journey. Having already acquired a skill and noticing that most women in the area had to travel far for work, and some were underage and facing difficulties, I discussed with my husband the idea of investing in a factory right here in the locality. At the same time, we researched and established partnerships with companies to source raw materials for production.
Initially, the workshop only had 4-5 sewing machines and a few workers, making it very small in scale. However, with determination, diligence, and keen management skills, Ms. Ha gradually expanded production. Today, her workshop has 16 regularly operating sewing machines and 15 machines for home-based subcontracting. On average, each worker produces about 200 products per day, mainly men 's trousers and jackets, supplying orders from businesses both within and outside the province. Ms. Ha shared: "In the future, I plan to continue investing in more modern machinery, expanding the production workshop, and diversifying products; at the same time, I hope to collaborate with businesses inside and outside the province to expand the market and help our products gain a stronger foothold."
Not only is Ms. Ha a successful businesswoman , but she also consistently focuses on creating jobs for rural women. Ms. Pham Thi Nhai from Dai Dong village, Hung Phu commune, shared: "The work here is stable, and the working environment is friendly. I've learned many sewing skills and work organization techniques from Ms. Ha. She is very dynamic, creative, and proactive; she's truly a role model for other women to learn from."
Ms. To Thi Nhung, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Tien Hai Commune, said: "Ms. Pham Thi Ngan and Ms. Pham Thi Ha are just two of many exemplary women in the commune who have been striving to develop their economy. In the coming time, the Women's Union of Tien Hai Commune will continue to promote activities to support women in starting businesses and developing their economy in conjunction with building new rural areas; focusing on organizing training courses, transferring technology, and improving production and business management skills for members. At the same time, we will also strengthen connections with businesses and consumption units to expand the market for products, contributing to promoting the economic development of the locality."
