Special 'tours' at school

To help students familiarize themselves with the school before the new school year or to better understand the curriculum, textbooks, and activities at the new grade level, many schools in Ho Chi Minh City have organized special "school tours".

GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH AND EXPLORING THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Every year, around April, Le Dinh Chinh Primary School (Ward 16, District 11) organizes the "My Primary School" event to introduce to organizations and parents the primary school where 6-year-old children in the area will enter first grade.

Ho Chi Minh City's education system is moving towards openness: transparency and creativity.

In recent years, schools from preschool to primary, secondary, and high school levels in Ho Chi Minh City have developed in an open and transparent direction, publicly disclosing educational programs and facilities to parents and students.

Many preschools, such as Tan Phong, 19/5 (District 7), Soc Nau (Go Vap District), 19/5 City (District 1), Nam Saigon (District 7), Tuoi Tho 7 (District 3), etc., effectively organize interactive activities with parents. For example, they invite parents to visit the school, or have them spend a day as preschool teachers to better understand the work of the teachers and to learn how to better care for and educate their children. Some schools invite parents to visit the kitchen, observe their children's mealtimes, and participate in activities with their children.

Besides organizing tours to introduce students to their future schools, schools in Ho Chi Minh City have done an excellent job of holding "Open House" events in recent years, especially at the primary school level. On this day, parents visit the school to study and have lunch with their children, and ask questions to the school administration to better understand the curriculum and teaching quality.

Mr. Van Nhat Phuong, Principal of Le Dinh Chinh Primary School, said that this event was also an opportunity for teachers and students of the school to interact with preschool teachers and 6-year-old children in the area. Many lively cultural activities and exchanges between primary school teachers, students, and preschool children took place.

Parents whose children are about to enter first grade can visit the school, learn about the facilities, and talk with the school's management and teachers. For example, parents can learn about the textbooks their children will be using in first grade, the 2018 General Education Program, etc. From there, parents know what they need to prepare to ensure their children have a smooth and fulfilling start to first grade.

This school year, Le Dinh Chinh Primary School organized the "My Primary School" event on the morning of April 25th. Mr. Van Nhat Phuong said that parents and children will feel more at ease knowing what their children will be like in first grade, and how the primary school environment differs from preschool… Notably, the event not only welcomed parents and preschool children currently attending Preschool P.16, District 11, but also parents and 6-year-old children from throughout P.16 (the People's Committee of the ward sent out invitations).

" OPEN TOUR " - FUN ACTIVITIES OF HIGH SCHOOL

On April 12th, Nguyen Hien High School in District 11 organized an "Open Tour" to welcome over 300 ninth-grade students from junior high schools in Ho Chi Minh City with the message "Real-life experience - genuine emotions". The event aimed to help students gain more information about the high school they might apply to for tenth grade.

During the "Open Tour," the students get to experience a day as high school students. Besides immersing themselves in lively cultural activities, engaging lessons, and participating in workshops making scented candles and bookmarks, the 9th-grade students also get to explore the school's modern facilities. Under the guidance of senior high school students, the graduating middle school students visit the traditional room, modern classrooms, multi-functional rooms, chemistry, physics, and biology laboratories, and the studio.

Mr. Pham Le Thanh, Chemistry teacher and Deputy Head of Information and Propaganda at Nguyen Hien High School, shared: "This year's Open Tour is divided into two sessions, each lasting about two hours, with two main activities: Students get to experience the lessons they choose, the subjects they love and wish to pursue at the high school level, as if they were Nguyen Hien High School students. The second activity is interaction and experience at the Arts Club and Psychology Club workshops with the theme "Self-Love - Nurturing Happiness." Students get to interact with the older students in the clubs, experience making candles, handmade gifts, bookmarks, etc."

Prior to this "Open Tour" program, Nguyen Hien High School had already organized many activities to connect with 9th-grade students. In the first semester, the school collaborated with the Psychology and Arts Club to organize two orientation workshops for graduating students. Following this will be a series of major activities such as the welcome day for 10th-grade students at the beginning of the school year, the 2025 Spring Camp, where 9th-grade students are also invited to participate and experience the booths and activities organized by Nguyen Hien High School students themselves. On this occasion, parents are also invited to visit the facilities and receive advice to help them choose a suitable learning environment for their children…

STUDENTS ARE TOUR GUIDES

At the end of March, 9th-grade students from Le Loi Secondary School in Tan Phu District participated in an exciting tour – a day as students at Tay Thanh High School. Notably, the students from Tay Thanh High School themselves acted as tour guides, leading the 9th-grade students in learning about their school.

The first experience for 9th grade students was attending a flag-raising ceremony with engaging welcoming activities. Afterwards, they had their questions answered about the curriculum, extracurricular activities, and clubs at Tay Thanh High School by Mr. Nguyen Quang Dat, the Principal, and Mr. Pham Van Cuong, the Vice Principal.

After the counseling session, the "tour guides" from Tay Thanh High School took the 9th-grade students to classrooms and functional rooms of the school to learn more about the environment they might be in for the next three years of high school.

Mr. Pham Van Cuong stated that the "Tay Thanh Tour" aims to provide enjoyable experiences, helping 9th-grade students gain more motivation and clearer direction for the upcoming 10th-grade entrance exam. This is also an opportunity for the two schools to strengthen their ties and build a robust educational environment together. In particular, the program helps 9th-grade students understand the 2018 high school curriculum, understand themselves better, and provides them with a more solid foundation for registering their 10th-grade preferences and determining their academic path in high school…
