Dengue fever is currently endemic in over 100 countries, with the Americas, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific being the most severely affected, particularly Asia. To proactively prevent and control the disease in the community, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the World Health Organization have designated June 15th each year as "ASEAN Dengue Prevention and Control Day".

Having suffered from dengue fever and undergone a long hospital stay, Mr. Nguyen Quy (An Khanh commune, Hanoi ) has come to understand just how dangerous this disease is to his health. Mr. Nguyen Quy shared that nearly a year ago, when he experienced symptoms like fever, headache, and a red rash, he initially thought he was just sick as usual. However, after going to the hospital for tests, he learned he had dengue fever.

According to doctors, if dengue fever is not detected and treated promptly, patients may face severe symptoms such as pleural effusion, gastrointestinal bleeding, bleeding in the lungs and brain, severe hepatitis, myocarditis, encephalitis, kidney failure, etc., significantly affecting their health and potentially leading to death.

"After that illness, my family and I are no longer complacent and always strictly follow the dengue fever prevention and control measures guided by the health sector to prevent outbreaks in the community," said Mr. Nguyen Quy.

According to Vuong Tri Hong, Deputy Director of An Khanh Commune Health Station (Hanoi City), four cases of dengue fever have been recorded in An Khanh commune since the beginning of the year.

According to Vu Cao Cuong, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Health, in recent years, the city has seen an increase in the number of dengue fever patients compared to previous years. Outbreaks are becoming more complex, no longer concentrated mainly in the inner city as before, but increasingly spreading to suburban areas.

The causes include hot and humid weather conditions with heavy rainfall creating a favorable environment for disease-carrying mosquitoes to thrive; poor living habits of some people; rapid urbanization, many construction sites with stagnant water, inadequate waste collection, and uncovered household water containers... all of which create conditions for mosquito breeding.

Strengthening public awareness campaigns is crucial to improving community understanding and contributing to the prevention and control of dengue fever.

Furthermore, the circulation of multiple dengue virus strains increases the risk of reinfection and severe illness in patients. Meanwhile, mobilizing the community and manpower for larval control and chemical spraying in many areas remains challenging, resulting in incomplete outbreak control and prolonged epidemics in the region.

At the rally in response to ASEAN Dengue Prevention and Control Day (June 15) 2026, organized by the Hanoi Department of Health, Deputy Director of the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (Ministry of Health) Tran Nhu Duong stated: Dengue fever is one of the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne diseases in the world. Currently, about 2.5 billion people live in endemic areas; each year, the world records between 50 and 100 million cases and about 24,000 deaths due to dengue fever.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have chosen June 15th each year to hold events in ASEAN countries to raise public awareness, especially to promote coordination among countries in controlling dengue fever outbreaks.

In Vietnam, since the beginning of the year, the country has recorded more than 42,000 cases of dengue fever and three deaths. It is predicted that the number of dengue cases may continue to increase in the coming period as the annual peak season approaches.

In response to ASEAN Dengue Prevention and Control Day (June 15) in 2026, the health sector calls on every citizen and every household to "dedicate 10 minutes each week to dengue prevention and control" through simple but effective actions such as checking and eliminating mosquito larvae, covering water containers, changing the water in flower vases, collecting waste materials; and cooperating with the health sector in chemical spraying campaigns to prevent the disease in their living areas.
