According to Xinhua News Agency, at around 7:30 PM on May 22nd, a gas explosion occurred at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County, Shanxi Province, China. At the time, 247 workers were working underground.
Local emergency management authorities announced on Saturday (May 23) that, as of 6 a.m., 201 people had been brought to safety, while eight others died and 38 remained trapped underground following the mine accident.
Currently, search and rescue operations for those trapped are being carried out urgently.
Earlier, Xinhua News Agency reported that carbon monoxide levels had "exceeded limits" in the mine.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Chinese authorities.
