On social media platform X, the U.S. Secret Service stated that it “has received information about reports of gunfire near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW,” an area just one block from the White House, and is “coordinating with forces on the scene.” CBS News sources indicated that approximately 15-30 shots were fired.

According to investigative sources, two people were injured, including a suspect and a passerby who are believed to have been shot. The suspect is in critical condition, while the other person sustained serious injuries and has been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

White House spokesman Steven Cheung said President Donald Trump was at the residence around 4 p.m. that day. However, it is unclear whether he was still on the White House grounds at the time of the shooting.

In a post on X, ABC News' senior White House correspondent, Selina Wang, shared a video capturing the moment she heard "sounds like dozens of gunshots" and immediately ducked down to find cover.

Wang said she was doing what White House reporters usually do – filming herself on her phone to post on social media. In the video, she was talking about Trump's earlier statements that day regarding the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran when gunshots suddenly rang out.

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department stated on its X account that the Secret Service is processing the scene and advised people to stay away from the area. The shooting location is also near where a gunman ambushed two West Virginia National Guard members last November.

In that incident, 20-year-old U.S. Army soldier Sarah Beckstrom died from her injuries, while Andrew Wolfe, then 24, was critically wounded. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been charged.

The May 23 incident occurred less than a month after the shooting at a party attended by President Donald Trump. US officials described the April 25 incident as an assassination attempt against President Trump. Suspect Cole Tomas Allen denies the charge of plotting to kill Trump and remains incarcerated in federal prisons.

Following that incident, U.S. Secret Service agents shot a suspect who allegedly fired shots at security personnel near the Washington Monument, also located near the White House.

Michael Marx, 45, from Texas, has been charged in connection with the May 4th shooting. A teenager standing near the scene was injured in the incident.
