A humiliating defeat
That was undoubtedly one of the most humiliating defeats in the history of the Spanish royal club. This defeat was even more shameful considering they possessed a "galaxy" of superstars who are among the best in football today. From Mbappe, Vinicius, Bellingham to Rodrygo, Tchouameni, Courtois... And the most disappointed of them all was obviously Mbappe.
When Real Madrid won the Champions League last season and simultaneously announced the signing of Mbappe, there were many concerns about the future of the French superstar. He did everything to leave PSG and move to the greatest club in football history. In the long run, that decision may not have been wrong, but it wasn't really the right time.
After the peak, there must come a period of decline. That was the situation for Real Madrid when Mbappe arrived at the Bernabeu. Even without the French superstar, Real Madrid already showed a perfect attacking line with Vinicius, Rodrygo, and Bellingham playing so well together.
Is the crack named after Mbappe?
The arrival of Mbappe didn't make that attacking line any more perfect. Experts have spoken about the risk of conflict between Mbappe and Vinicius, as both have quite similar playing styles and almost completely overlap in their preferred positions. Although Mbappe and Vinicius maintain a good relationship, the truth is they still can't harmonize their playing styles. Even Joselu – who was "sacrificed" when Mbappe arrived – is causing fans to regret his departure from the team last summer.
Following the defeat to Arsenal, goalkeeper Courtois spoke to the media about the lack of a true center forward in the team. It was a sensitive statement, directly targeting Mbappe. The French striker is an upgraded version of Vinicius – who has lost form this season – but coach Ancelotti chose to use both on the field simultaneously. As a result, Real Madrid now lacks a genuine "number 9" striker, especially when facing a team with such a solid defense as Arsenal.
Too bad for Mbappe.
Real Madrid's decline also stems from Toni Kroos's retirement. The German midfielder held an indescribably crucial role at the Bernabeu for the past decade. And clearly, players like Ceballos, Brahim Diaz, and Camavinga have not been able to replace Kroos.
Not only that, Real Madrid is facing a serious imbalance between its two lines. President Florentino Perez's overhaul began with the attack and gradually extended down to the defense. As a result, Real Madrid now possesses a squad full of young attacking stars like Mbappe, Vinicius, Rodyrgo, Bellingham, and Endrick. However, their defense is crumbling as Carvajal, Rudiger, and Alaba are getting older. This season, Carvajal and Alaba have made virtually no significant contribution due to recurring injuries.
It's a shame for Mbappe, arriving at the Bernabeu during a period of significant team restructuring, while also facing immense pressure from the public. Before Mbappe, Real Madrid won the Champions League. But after he joined, they suffered a humiliating defeat.
If Real Madrid had won, Mbappe would have had the chance to reunite with his former club PSG in the Champions League semi-finals. But in the end, that remained a distant dream for Mbappe.
