Farmers urgently harvest summer-autumn rice to avoid storm No. 5

QTO - According to information from the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, storm No. 5 is forecast to cause heavy rain in the coming days. To minimize damage, with the motto "green at home is better than old in the field", farmers in the province are urgently harvesting summer-autumn rice.

Accordingly, in the summer-autumn crop, the whole province assigned to plant 38,792 hectares, currently the rice area has blossomed over 35,800 hectares, and about 3,000 hectares have not blossomed. The harvested area by 11:00 a.m. on August 24 was about 3,700 hectares, the estimated yield was 55-58 quintals/ha, equivalent to the summer-autumn crop in 2024, the price of fresh rice sold at the field is from 5,300-5,500 VND/kg; the price of rice linked with the Provincial Agricultural Seed Center (linked to seed production) is 7,200 VND/kg of fresh rice at the field. The area of ​​regenerated rice of 7,706 hectares has been harvested.

Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection Bui Phuoc Trang said: It is expected that by the end of today, the whole province will harvest about 4,500 hectares of rice. To proactively respond to storm No. 5, the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) previously issued a document directing communes and wards to focus human resources, materials, and machinery to speed up the harvesting progress day and night of over 80% of the ripe rice area to avoid damage from heavy rain and flooding; for areas in the flowering, milky, and waxy stages, it is necessary to quickly drain water in fields and canals to prepare for heavy rain due to the impact of storms in the coming days; reinforce dikes, especially weak dike sections, dredge canals, prepare plans, and have flood control equipment ready to promptly control flooding when heavy rain occurs...

In particular, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has established two delegations to inspect production in the southern and northern communes of the province to encourage localities to speed up the harvest of rice areas that are over 80% ripe; provide guidance on solutions to cope with storms and floods; assign agencies and units in the sector to closely coordinate with the People's Committees of communes and wards; and agricultural production cooperatives/groups in the area to provide guidance on measures to prevent and combat storm No. 5.
