(HG) - In order to increase income for farming households, and in conjunction with the restructuring of crop patterns on rice-growing land to rice cultivation combined with aquaculture, farmers in Nga Bay city have now raised fish on 75.2 hectares, achieving 188% of the plan set for 2023.
Fish farming in rice paddies is mainly carried out by farmers using a combination of species, such as snakehead fish, striped catfish, carp, and tilapia, with supplemental feed, while also utilizing readily available fresh food sources in the locality (golden apple snails, miscellaneous fish, etc.). Fish fry are raised in net cages, ponds, and ditches and then released into the rice paddies after the summer-autumn rice harvest.
Converting rice-growing land to a rice-based aquaculture system has brought higher profits to farmers. In addition to two rice crops, farmers also earn profit from one fish crop. After six months of farming, people harvest an average of 5.5 tons of fish per hectare, with a profit of 60-70 million VND per hectare per crop.
According to the plan, in 2024, Nga Bay city will continue to encourage farmers to convert an additional 40 hectares of land for rice cultivation combined with aquaculture.
