With the bamboo rat farming model, Mr. Nguyen Long Phi has a revenue of hundreds of millions of dong each year.

Thanks to the bamboo rat breeding model, every year, Mr. Nguyen Long Phi (34 years old, residing in Thuan Tay 1 hamlet, Thuan Thanh commune, Can Giuoc district, Long An province) earns a profit of several hundred million VND. Starting the bamboo rat breeding business at the age of 28, up to now, he has accumulated a lot of experience and is willing to share it with those who want to learn and try their hand at this pet.

In the beginning, he encountered many difficulties in building and managing the barn, but with a spirit of learning, he researched the techniques and succeeded with the bamboo rat farming model.

His farm currently has about 80 breeding pairs of bamboo rats. He provides breeding bamboo rats and also guarantees output for breeders. Regarding techniques, he guides and supports breeders when they encounter difficulties, especially in the early stages. Bamboo rats are not like other animals, the breeding process requires more stringent techniques: Food must be dry; the cage must be airy, have moderate temperature, be cleaned regularly, and disinfected once a month to prevent bamboo rats from getting skin diseases, bacterial infections, pneumonia or diarrhea.

The bamboo rat cages are designed simply, do not take up much space, only 50m2 can raise up to 300-400 individuals. Each cage contains a pair of breeding bamboo rats, commercial bamboo rats or a few newly separated bamboo rats. The initial cost to raise bamboo rats is about 40-50 million VND to build the cage and buy the breeding animals.

Mr. Phi shared: “Dui is a rodent, prefers darkness, and mainly eats bamboo stems, sugarcane, corn, potatoes, etc. On average, the cost of food for each adult dui is about 1,500 VND/day. There are 3 types of dui: moldy dui, peach-cheeked dui and mutant dui, of which mutant dui are often bought as pets. The meat of the dui is fragrant, delicious, and has high nutritional value, so consumption is very convenient. Currently, the price of dui on the market is quite high, the price of commercial peach-cheeked dui is from 900,000 to 1,000,000 VND/kg, the price of commercial moldy dui is from 700,000 to 750,000 VND/kg”.

The time to raise bamboo rats is also quite short, from birth to about 45-60 days, the offspring can be sold. Commercial bamboo rats are raised for 5-6 months for the Moc bamboo rats, 7-9 months for the peach-cheeked bamboo rats.

This is a new livestock model, with high income, and can be replicated in the near future./.
