'At both ends of longing'

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên12/11/2023

It must be said that in the realm of revolutionary music, composer Phan Huỳnh Điểu stands out as a phenomenon of "revolutionary music that is also very romantic." This unique style is due to his exceptional talent in setting famous poems to music, with each setting possessing a vibrant melody and tone… Phan Huỳnh Điểu's songs set to poetry are diverse and colorful, yet all of them deeply move the hearts of listeners.

The performance by the children from the Ho Chi Minh City Children's House opened the music night.

The opening act of the concert was a performance by the children of the City Children's House with a medley of "Remembering Uncle Ho" and "The Little Trumpet Band ." Then, the three boys of the MTV group transported the audience back to the vibrant and heroic atmosphere of the Southern marching troops with the song "National Guard" (composed in 1945)... The highlight of the concert was the songs set to poetry: The title song "At Both Ends of the Longing" (poem by Tran Hoai Thu) was full of longing and yearning, sung by Minh Thu. Even amidst the hardships of war, fighting and... loving each other, the incredibly romantic "You're at the Head of the River, I'm at the End" (poem by Hoai Vu, duet by Dang Hoang Nam - Le Thu Hien); or the passionate yet gentle and faithful songs set to Xuan Quynh's poems: "Boat and Sea" (performed by Dang Hoang Nam), "Love Letter at the End of Autumn " (Minh Thu). On both sides of the Truong Son mountain range, love is expressed through the lingering longing in songs like "Threads of Memory, Threads of Affection" (poem by Thuy Bac, performed by Le Thu Hien)... Besides these songs set to poetry, there are also "Love in a Letter" (duet by Duong Phi - Tanh Linh) and "The Stars of the Night " (by The Vy), which are also very distinctive.

A highlight of the evening was the performance of traditional Vietnamese musical instruments (dan bau, tam thap luc, tranh, ty ba, t'rưng, drums, guitar, etc.) by the 4th Army Information Brigade, performing the famous song " Bong Cay Konia " by composer Phan Huynh Dieu. The audience applauded enthusiastically.

Two singers delivered outstanding performances during the concert: Viet Hoa with the song "Em nhu ang may" (lyrics by Truong Nam Chi) and Ly Hoang Kim with two songs , "Dem nay anh o dau?" and " Tia nang " (Ly Hoang Kim is a vocal instructor at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music). Both singers demonstrated their "class" in handling these famous songs.

The lively atmosphere also came from the guest speakers (not included in the program), namely musician Truong Quang Luc (90 years old), musician Tran Hieu (87 years old), and veteran singer - Meritorious Artist Mang Thi Hoi (75 years old)... Musician Truong Quang Luc recalled the time he followed senior musicians to participate in the revolution in 1947 (he was 9 years younger than musician Phan Huynh Dieu). One memory between the two musicians was setting to music the poem "Vam Co Dong" by poet Hoai Vu... Musician Tran Hieu, despite being nearly 90, still took to the stage, eloquently and passionately performing "March of Day and Night " (poem by Bui Cong Minh), prompting enthusiastic applause and singing along from the audience. In particular, Meritorious Artist Mang Thi Hoi, upon being invited onto the stage, burst into tears, which moved MC Quynh Hoa, who kindly comforted and encouraged her… She said: "If it weren't for Mr. Phan Huynh Dieu, there certainly wouldn't be Mang Thi Hoi. For 50 years, the song 'Bong Cay Konia' (poem by Ngoc Anh) has been associated with the name Mang Thi Hoi. My children keep saying: 'Mom, you're a singer, but you only sing one song!'"… Then she began to sing: "In the morning, I work in the fields…", and with just those few syllables, the entire audience applauded enthusiastically. Indeed, "the older the ginger, the spicier it gets," the song ' Bong Cay Konia ' has become inextricably linked to Mang Thi Hoi's voice; the more she sings, the more extraordinary and skillful her voice becomes. Listening to her sing, no one would think she's approaching 80… Composer Phan Hong Ha (son of composer Phan Huynh Dieu) told the writer: "No one sings 'Bong Cay Konia' as well as she does. She sang exceptionally well tonight!"

The performance concludes with "Life Is Still Beautiful," featuring musician Tran Hieu ( center ).

Composer Phan Hong Ha also proved to be a true "prodigy," sometimes playing the accordion to accompany singer Viet Hoa, and other times sitting at the piano to accompany his daughter (Thu Huong) and grandson (Tuan Kiet) leading the choir in the song "Still Loving You" (a composition by Phan Hong Ha, with lyrics mentioning almost all of his father's songs). Surely the spirit of the late composer Phan Huynh Dieu would be very pleased with his son, grandson, and great-grandson in this performance.

It's also worth mentioning the charm and grace of MC Quynh Hoa, who brought unforgettable impressions to the concert thanks to her quick wit and ability to handle unexpected situations on stage.
