International films competing for the Best International Film Oscar in 2026 will go through two rounds of voting.
The first round determined the shortlist of nominees. Voting took place last week among the respective subject committees for each category. Unfortunately, the Vietnamese film "Red Rain" was not included in this shortlist.
Other works that didn't make it through this round include Familia (Italy), The Last Dance (Hong Kong), and My Father's Shadow (United Kingdom)...
From the shortlist, the works will proceed to the next round of voting (from January 12 to 16, 2026) to select the 5 nominees for the final list.
However, director Dang Thai Huyen's film has had a brilliant journey since its release. Most recently, the film participated in the "Vietnamese Cinema - Journey of Light" week in France and was selected to be screened at the closing ceremony.

Among the shortlist for Best International Film are several highly acclaimed titles such as Sentimental Value (Norway), The Secret Agent (Brazil), It Was Just an Accident (France), Sirât (Spain), No Other Choice (South Korea), and The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia).
Other Asian representatives on the shortlist include: Left-Handed Girl (Taiwan, China), Kokuho (Japan), Homebound (India), and Palestine 36 (Palestine).
The Academy also announced the shortlist of nominees for several other categories, including: Feature Documentary, Original Score, Original Song, Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, Visual Effects, Casting Achievement, Short Documentary, Short Action Film, and Short Animated Film.
The official list of nominations for the 2026 Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2026.
