According to the Washington Post, the official noted that as of May 24, the US and Iran had not signed any formal agreement, and it was unclear how binding any existing framework would be.
Meanwhile, a diplomat said the latest proposal is awaiting Iranian approval. According to the proposal, after Iran signs the memorandum, within 30 days it will immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz and implement measures to ensure trade resumes as it was before the conflict. The proposal also stipulates that Iran, the US, and their allies will declare an immediate cessation of all military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.
The proposal also included Iran reaffirming its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and the two sides working over the next two months to agree on a mechanism for handling Iran's stockpiles of enriched uranium.
Earlier, Iranian state media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei as saying that Iran and the US were in the final stages of drafting a 14-point memorandum and that the results would be announced in the next 3-4 days.
According to the spokesperson, the key points of the document concern a ceasefire between Iran and the US, the lifting of the blockade on Iranian seaports, and the removal of the freeze on Iranian assets in foreign banks.
