Palmeiras beat Al Ahly after match was delayed 40 minutes due to weather

Palmeiras defeated Al Ahly 2-0 at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the early morning of June 20 after the match was suspended for about 40 minutes in the second half due to "extreme weather".

In this match, both teams played quite fiercely but were very deadlocked in the first 45 minutes. The notable highlight of this match was that Raphael Veiga (Palmeiras) was given a direct red card by referee Anthony Taylor in the 36th minute, after a very dangerous tackle on an Al Ahly player.

But after consulting with the VAR team, the referee overturned the red card, which gave Palmeiras a chance to rise in the second half.

In the 49th minute, Al Ahly defender Achraf Dari headed a free kick into his own net, giving Palmeiras a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal scored by a team in Group A in a total of 257 minutes of play.

Palmeiras did not have to wait long to make it 2-0 when substitute Jose Lopez doubled the lead just 10 minutes later.

In the 62nd minute, as dark clouds appeared over MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the referee decided to stop the match.

A message on screens inside the stadium asked fans to "leave the Seating Bowl and seek shelter inside the stadium due to severe weather in this area".

The match had to be stopped for nearly 40 minutes and when it returned, there were no more goals scored by either team. This victory helped Palmeiras lead Group A with 4 points and full of hope to win a ticket to the next round.
