The appointment of Bernardo Silva as Manchester City captain is a sign of renewal under Guardiola's reign. |
This decision was made just before the club's first match at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, where Manchester City will begin their journey to defend the world title they won two years ago in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking to The Guardian , Pep revealed that this was the first time he had personally chosen captains for the clubs he had managed. "This is the first time in my coaching career that I've decided who will be captain," Guardiola shared at a press conference in Philadelphia.
Previously, since the beginning of his managerial career, Guardiola had always allowed players and staff to vote for the vice-captain and captain. However, the controversies surrounding his leadership at Manchester City last season led Pep to break with tradition this time.
He also appointed Ruben Dias, Rodri, and Erling Haaland as vice-captains, creating a new leadership group for the club to replace De Bruyne and Kyle Walker.
Silva, 30 years old, joined Manchester City from Monaco in 2017 and is entering the final year of his contract, which runs until June 2026. Despite constant links to a return to Benfica – his childhood club – Silva stated: “I know what I will do, but it’s not the right time to say. I choose to stay at Man City, even though I’ve had many other options in the past and this year.”
