The office of French President Emmanuel Macron announced that French Education Minister Gabriel Attal, 34, has been appointed as the new French Prime Minister, succeeding Élisabeth Borne.
Accordingly, Attal is the youngest prime minister in French history to be appointed. He is also the first French prime minister to openly identify as gay.
This change comes as French President Emmanuel Macron seeks to generate new momentum for his second term ahead of the European Parliament elections at the end of 2024. Previously, on January 8th, Ms. Borne, 62, submitted her resignation. She took office in May 2022 and was the second female prime minister in French history.

Under President Macron, Attal was known for his role as the French Minister of Education and as a government spokesperson. He was formerly a member of the Socialist Party and joined Macron's new coalition in 2016.
After becoming France's Minister of Education, Attal announced a ban on students wearing long robes in classrooms, a ban that will take effect from the new school year in September 2023.
He also proposed a pilot program for uniforms in some public schools, as part of an effort to reduce students' concern about what to wear to school and lessen school bullying related to this issue.
According to opinion polls in France, Attal is the most popular minister in Borne's government.
In France, the president sets the general policies, but the prime minister manages the government's operations, meaning they are accountable when the government faces scandal.
Earlier last month, Macron had fueled speculation about a government reshuffle when he promised a new political initiative following a tumultuous 2023 marked by reforms to the pension system and immigration laws, as well as unrest in several cities. The recent passage of tough immigration laws has caused rifts within the ruling coalition, prompting Macron to promise a new political initiative.
